To this point, it seems like the announcement of Dwayne Johnson portraying Black Adam came long before a DC universe movie even hit the screen, especially after Johnson’s recent comments where he said to not expect to see him in the upcoming Shazam! movie. While that’s all left us scratching our heads a bit, yesterday’s rumor mill brought an interesting piece of news that might allow us to see Johnson don the duds of the DC baddie.
Stamped as a rumor, for now, the report originated from The Wrap, where their insiders told them that Warner Bros. “current plan for the sequel is for the members of Suicide Squad to be tasked with tracking down a weapon of mass destruction. That weapon? Black Adam himself. The villain is best known in DC Comics as the main nemesis of superhero Shazam.”
With the underwhelming success of Suicide Squad last year, it would make sense for the studio to do whatever they can to bolster the appeal of the sequel, even though it sounds extremely odd for characters like Harley Quinn, Deadshot and other ground-based characters to take on a god-like being like Black Adam. Then again, having Task Force X track down this “weapon of mass destruction” could be the closing moments of the film, which would mean Johnson would only be featured in a cameo rather than the main villain role. This would allow a set-up for whatever follows, more than likely the Black Adam spinoff that was announced not too long ago.
The report also mentions Johnson’s quote from back in May, where he said: “We have a really cool surprise for Black Adam that I can’t reveal, in terms of where we will see Black Adam being introduced.” You put the two together and it seems to add up, especially when considering the slate of DC movies that are currently out in the open. Not to mention that The Rock is a worldwide sensation, so why wouldn’t the studio want to get him involved as soon as possible?
What do you think? Would this be the right way to introduce Johnson’s Black Adam? Do you think he should be in the Shazam! movie? Are you looking forward to a Suicide Squad sequel? Suicide Squad is to be directed by Gavin O’Connor and is expected to begin production in Fall of next year with no set release date.
