Production has officially begun on the new film On the Basis of Sex, and to celebrate the occasion, Participant Media has revealed the first image for the film, giving us our first look at Academy Award nominated actress Felicity Jones as Ruth Bader Ginsburg. The script was written by Ginsburg’s nephew Daniel Stiepleman and follows Ginsburg as a young lawyer who teams with her husband – played by Armie Hammer – to bring an eventual groundbreaking case before the Supreme Court.
The film is being directed by Mimi Leder and features a strong supporting cast including Kathy Bates, Sam Waterston, Jack Reynor, Stephen Root, Cailee Spaeny and the recently added Justin Theroux. Here’s what Leder had to say about the project:
“Our story of Ruth Bader Ginsburg resonates with me on so many levels – from the inspiring partnership she found in her marriage, to overcoming adversity as a woman and discovering the strength of her own voice, to her empathetic commitment to those in need of a voice no matter their gender, race, status or religious beliefs,” said Leder. “In these tumultuous times, stories like this speak to the heart of humanity and remind us what it means to lead with love and compassion as the way forward.”
Here’s what producer Robert Cort had to say on the meaning of the film: “On The Basis Of Sex shines a spotlight on the origin story of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Her rollercoaster struggle for women’s rights makes for a riveting courtroom drama, and we feel that her remarkable relationship with her husband and family will inspire movie audiences everywhere.”
As someone who doesn’t know a whole lot about Ginsburg’s story, I’m incredibly interesting in seeing this film. I’m a sucker for historical biopics and this is something that is rarely done on film these days. It doesn’t hurt to have the cast they have either. What do you think? Are you interested in seeing Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s story on the big screen? On the Basis of Sex currently has no release date.
