‘Fast & Furious’ Spinoff Set for a 2019 Release

While Tyrese Gibson may not be too happy about it, worldwide fans will be. The Fast & Furious franchise is one of the most popular set of movies around the globe. Ot not only crushes here on America’s turf, but is just as powerful when it comes to the international box-office. The most recent sequel, The Fate of the Furious, probably didn’t do as well as Universal executives were expecting, but that has not stopped the studio from hitting the brakes on this franchise.

As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Universal has officially set a 2019 release date for the next Fast & Furious movie, but it’s just not the one you were expecting. Fast 9 has officially been pushed back to 2020 to make way for the series’ first spinoff, one that will focus on Dwayne Johnson’s Luke Hobbs and Jason Statham’s Deckard Shaw. As noted by THR, Johnson and Statham have yet to officially sign on for any kind of spinoff, but it’s extremely hard to see this movie moving forward without them playing the character they made famous. Why? Their chemistry in F. Gary Gray’s The Fate of the Furious is the only reason this movie is happening in the first place. Universal first entertained the idea when they all witnessed the connection Johnson and Statham had on set, but once the high positive reaction came out from fans, it became a no-brainer.

What I’m interested in is when exactly this story will take place. Will it be set after the events of The fate of the Furious or go back to when Deckard Shaw was one of the most wanted men in the world? Personally I would like to see the latter, but because Johnson and Statham’s chemistry was one of the few redeeming qualities of The Fate of the Furious and the fact that Universal will continue making these movies, I’m pretty much in for anything that will take us down a different road in this universe.

No director was announced, but the report did reveal that Chris Morgan (The Fast and the Furious: Take Drift) is in charge of the script duties. What do you think? Are you looking forward to a Fast & Furious spinoff? Do you like that it’ll feature Hobbs and Shaw? Sound off in the comments below!
