Courtesy of Entertainment Weekly, we now have our first official look at Pacific Rim: Uprising. EW revealed the first stills this morning, which also came with the news that we’ll be getting our first trailer tomorrow! The sequel was originally developed by creator Guillermo del Toro, where he intended to return and direct, but he dropped out to direct the upcoming The Shape of Water and Daredevil Season 1 showrunner Steven S. DeKnight stepped in.
Uprising takes place 10 years after the original and follows John Boyega’s Jake, the son of Idris Elba’s Stacker Pentecost from the first movie. Jake was once a promising Jaeger pilot, but because his father paid more attention to Mako, they had a fall out and Jake became a black market dealer in the criminal underworld. But after learning that the Kaiju may soon be making a return, Mako gives him one last chance to live up to his fathers promise and take lead against the new wave of monsters.
This is a pretty interesting way to integrate Boyega’s new character. At first, I wasn’t a fan of following Pentecost’s son due to the fact that every major sequel seems to be doing it these days, and that I wanted to continue seeing Charlie Hunnam’s Raleigh under the suit. But now that I’ve learned a bit of backstory and with Boyega in the role, I’m now excited to be following this new character as we see what kind of apocalypse we’ll be canceling this time around.
The new images don’t just debut Boyega and his co-pilot Lambert, played by Scott Eastwood, in action, but some awesome looks at the new era of Jaegers we’ll be seeing kick ass next year. After the destruction of every Jaeger available in the original, we’ll be getting a new core group of high-tech robots for the sequel, which will be led by Jake and Lambert’s new state-of-the-art Jaeger named Gipsy Avenger. As for what they’ll be going up against? Boyega teases some monstrous new Kaiju’s:
“The Kaiju have found a new way,” Boyega says. “They are way more intelligent than we thought they were. The monsters you saw in the first movie were the test run, to see how the planet would hold up. The breach we thought was closed is not their only way into our world. Their plans are more specific. Jake leads the team in trying to build up a new defense against that.”
To be honest, while I absolutely adore the first one and am all kinds of excited for the sequel, these new images are a bit disappointing. Not so much the two involving humans, but rather the two featuring the Jaegers. Don’t get me wrong, the Jaegers looks awesome. The new take on the legend that is Gipsy Danger is awesome, but the images look they’re screenshots from a Target ad about the new Pacific Rim action figures. Granted the movie doesn’t come out for a solid five months or so, so I understand that the special effects may not be done, but if you’re going to show off your hooks in new images, I expect the vfx to be done in at least those images. Just my opinion.
What do you think of the new images? Are you looking forward to the trailer reveal tomorrow? Let me know in the comments! DeKnight’s Pacific Rim: Uprising hits theaters on March 23rd, 2018 and also stars Adria Arjone, Rinko Kikuchi, Tian Jing and Charlie Day.
