Filming on Doug Liman’s new film Chaos Walking has officially begun and to celebrate the occasion, star and all around cutie Daisy Ridley shared the first official image from the set. The adaptation also stars Tom Holland and is based on on Patrick Ness’ young adult novel titled The Knife of Never Letting Go, which takes place in a dystopian world lacking of women, where all living things can hear each other’s thoughts through a “stream of images, words and sounds called Noice.” Holland plays a young boy who comes across a solent young girl (played by Ridley), and together, they set off on a dangerous journey full of twists and turns.
Liman, who is probably best known for The Bourne Identity and Edge of Tomorrow, just released the Tom Cruise movie American Made. This project had been shuffling back and forth for a while, with director Robert Zemeckis once attached to direct, eventually falling in the lap of Liman. Liman hs proven that he’s quite a versatile director, with this film maybe being the most “out there” out of his work so far.
Ness’ The Knife of Never Letting Go is the first book in a trilogy that was dubbed the Chaos Walking novels. Ness also wrote A Monster Calls, which was also turned into a film by director J.A. Bayona, and turned out very well. If Liman is able to create something unique enough to become a hit with movie-goers, not only could Lionsgate have a new franchise under their umbrella, but Ridley and Holland could as well. While Liman can be considered a hit or miss director, his movies have always peeked my interest. And having two young talents like Rey and Spider-Man front and center, I’m very interested, again.
What do you think of the first look image? How does the story sound to you? Also starring Mads Mikkelsen, David Oyelowo, Demián Bichir, Nick Jonas and Kurt Sutter, Chaos Walking has a March 1st, 2019 release date.
