As it was teased yesterday, Paramount released the first official trailer for Annihilation. Written and directed by Alex Garland of Ex Machina, Annihilation is based on the best-selling novel of the same name by Jeff VanderMeer and follows a biologist (Natalie Portman) who volunteers for an expedition into an area known as Area X – an environmental disaster zone sealed off by the government for the last 3o years – after the tragic disappearance of her husband. With little to go off of, she and her team soon discover that the rules of nature and evolution not only work differently, but dangerously.
I’m fascinated by this trailer. It’s phenomenal. First of all, it’s just a teaser trailer. So as it should, it doesn’t really reveal much about the story or characters, rather leaving us on a cliff wondering what the f is going on. The synopsis itself tells us what we need to know, but now seeing it come to life is something else entirely. It’s tense, thrilling, and even a bit horrifying at times. Something isn’t right, which is what director Alex Harland does so well. Have you seen Ex Machina? Something obviously wasn’t right, except for the fact that it was 2015s best film. It’s no competition in my opinion. That was really the only confidence I needed to be excited for this film, but now that’s doubled with this new trailer.
As for the cast, it’s fantastic. It’s quite interesting actually that it’s an all female team. Is that by design within the story or did it just kind of happen? Are they only sending in women scientists for a reason? The footage makes us asks a billion different questions, which is exactly what a great teaser trailer does. Unfortunately, we have to wait five months to get those answers. But if this trailer is any indication, those burning questions will be worth the wait.
Check out the first trailer below, as well as my live reaction to it from this morning. What did you think of the footage? Have you read the book? Did the trailer impact you as much as it did me? Garland’s Annihilation also stars Jennifer Jason Leigh, Gina Rodriguez, Tessa Thompson and Oscar Isaac and will be released on February 23rd, 2018.
In seeking answers to her husband’s tragic disappearance, a biologist volunteers for an expedition into an area sealed off by the government for the last 30 years as an environmental disaster zone. A secret agency known as the Southern Reach has sent in 11 expeditions over those years to discover the truth about Area X, and those attempts were failures. She and her team find a pristine wilderness, but they also notice quickly that the rules of nature and evolution seem to work a little differently. And the creature they find is dangerous.
