It looks like the new X-Men universe is starting to take shape! We’ve known since Deadpool was brought to the screen that the possibility of a X-Force movie was a very high in the cards, but it became all but official when it was revealed that not just Cable would be joining the Deadpool sequel, but Domino as well. Now, 20th Century Fox has shown their hands as not only was a X-Force movie revealed to be in the works today, but Drew Goddard would be heading the project.
Reported by Deadline, Goddard will be in charge of both the writing and directing duties, with long time X-Men contributors Simon Kinberg and Lauren Shuler Donner producing, alongside Deadpool himself, Ryan Reynolds. Here’s a description of the story from Deadline:
“The X-Menspinoff film that revolves around Deadpool [Ryan Reynolds] and Cable [Josh Brolin] leading a Black Ops force of down and dirty mutant warriors who are far more ruthless than their X-Men counterparts.”
If you don’t recognize Goddard’s name, don’t worry, he’s not a household name among the regular audience, but he is among the film community. He’s been sought out for multiple superhero properties over the years, with the launching of Marvel’s Netflix universe with Daredevil Season 1 the biggest credit to his name. Outside of the comic book world, there’s an endless list of titles from both the TV and film world that should get fans excited for hims to spearhead this movie: Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Alias, Cloverfield, Lost, The Cabin in the Woods, World War Z, and The Martian. If that doesn’t get you excited I have no f**king clue what will.
Im one of those film fans who have wanted to see Goddard take on a tentpole property like this for a very long time. He was attached to write and direct the planned Sinister Six spinoff over at Sony, but after the disappointment of The Amazing Spider-Man 2, that never moved forward. While I would’ve loved to seen him tackle another MCU property outside of Daredevil, I’m ecstatic that he decided to take on the X-Force spinoff. And from the description Deadline gave, it sounds like it’s going to be AWESOME. The team of X-Force are some of the most violent, gritty and fun characters of the X-Men world, something that fits Goddard and his storytelling very well. Safe to say I’m pumped for this news.
What do you think? Are you a X-Force fan? Is Drew Goddard a good fit? Which characters do you hope to see join Deadpool and Cable? Sound off in the comments! Deadpool 2 will be released on June 1st, 2018.
