My jaw has hit the floor. And I still don’t know how I feel about it. Warner Bros. and DC are currently in the promo stage for their upcoming team-up film Justice League, but a massive bomb was just announced thanks to Deadline. Per their report, WB and DC are in the early stages of developing a movie that will focus on the Joker and his origin, but that’s not all. Martin Scorsese has been dropped as a producer. Yeah.
Don’t lose your mind yet, Scorsese isn’t directing or included in the writing process. Those will be awarded to The Hangover and War Dogs helmer Todd Phillips, with Phillips also being a part of the writing process with The Fighter screenwriter Scott Silver. There’s just one catch, it’s not part of the DCEU and Jared Leto will not be involved. Here’s the breakdown.
According to the report, the film is planned to be a launch pad for a new DC Films “banner” under WB, with the intention being to expand the DC universe, creating new storylines and allowing other actors to play their characters. And like I mentioned above, the Joker origin story movie will be separate from the current DCEU timeline that’s taking place, meaning that a new, younger actor will be taking up the mantle of the iconic Batman villain, not Jared Leto. Don’t worry though, the report also mentions that Leto will be returning to the role of the Joker in Suicide Squad 2 and the planned all-female spinoff Gotham City Sirens. So take a deep breathe and rejoice Joker fans, Leto is here to stay.
Along with that, Deadline also revealed some interesting tidbits about the film. First is that Phillips and Silver have already apparently started the script, although it’s still unknown as to how it will fit into WB and DC’s current schedule, as well as the new banner. But that’s not all. Here’s what Deadline had to say about the movie:
“The intention is to make a gritty and grounded hard-boiled crime film set in early-’80s Gotham City that isn’t meant to feel like a DC movie as much as one of Scorsese’s films from that era, like Taxi Driver, Raging Bull or The King Of Comedy.”
Now that we have all the details, let’s actually talk about this. Is this necessary? While myself and all of you are always down for more Joker, does he really need an origin story? Part of the massive appeal of the character is the true mystery behind him. The fact that we have no idea who he is and where he really came from. If we’ve learned one thing from films like X-Men Origins: Wolverine, The Hobbit trilogy or even Ridley Scott’s more recent Alien prequels, it’s that not every major character (comic book or not) needs to have his/her whole story told. And I’ll be honest, even though a big name like Scorsese will be involved, I can’t really find a way to get excited about this.
I just don’t want to see his origin told. I love the mystery, the suspense of it. Give me the basics, just like they did in Suicide Squad, that’s it. While I feel that way, many others will not share the same opinion as myself. Two reasons why. One being that most fans were not huge on Leto’s turn as the Clown Prince, and it gives them an opportunity to see a new actor under the smile. Two is simple, Martin Scorsese.
Anyway, now that you know what I think, let’s here your thoughts! How big of a surprise is this? Do you like it? Is it something you’re interested in? Who do you want to see in the role?
