The debut trailer for Molly’s Game was released this morning, revealing our first look at the directorial debut for longtime screenwriter Aaron Sorkin. Jessica Chastain stars in the film as Molly Bloom, a former Olympic-class skier who found her way into the world of underground poker, eventually running the world’s most exclusive poker game, which included actors, directors, famous athletes, business titans and the Russian mob.
When this film was first announce however long ago, I remember being really intrigued with the backbone of it. While only proven in the writing world, Aaron Sorking is a great name to have attached as director. Then you throw in Chastain and Idris Elba as cast leaders and it’s a game-changer. And the trailer itself looks like those moves were a great choice. I really enjoyed this footage. It’s interesting and calculated down to every dotted i and crossed t. And most of all, it’s a performance driven story. Anyone could have made this film, but having Sorkin as the writer and names like Chastain, Elba and more portraying the characters in his story, I’m ecstatic to see this film later this year.
Just like I said in my reaction, which you can see below, the only knock I have is that it definitely showed a lot of footage. For a first trailer, a 2:30+ trailer is a lot of footage to debut. While I won’t know for sure until the film is released, I hope nothing was spoiled, even though the synopsis itself does that to an extent. I beg you, don’t show any more footage for a film that could end up being an award contender.
Check out the first trailer below and after doing so, let me know your thoughts in the comments. Are you on the same page as I am? What intrigues you about it? Anything that turns you off? Sorkin’s Molly’s Game will be released on November 22nd and stars Jessica Chastain, Idris Elba, Michael Cera, Chris O’Dowd, and Kevin Costner.
MOLLY’S GAME is the true story of Molly Bloom a beautiful, young, Olympic-class skier who ran the world’s most exclusive high-stakes poker game for a decade before being arrested in the middle of the night by 17 FBI agents wielding automatic weapons. Her players included Hollywood royalty, sports stars, business titans and finally, unbeknownst to her, the Russian mob. Her only ally was her criminal defense lawyer Charlie Jaffey, who learned that there was much more to Molly than the tabloids led us to believe.
