More than any other franchise of the last decade and a half, the Disney and Pixar The Incredibles has been the sequel fans have wanted the most. What’s been over a decade overdue, the long-awaited sequel is finally coming and it seems we’ll be getting our first look this weekend at Disney’s D23 Expo. But before we see the family of superheroes in action one more time, John Lasseter, the man behind everything Disney, has given us some tidbits as to what to expect for the story this time around.
With the original taking place years ago, we’ve all wondered whether writer/director Brad Bird would pick up the story right from where it let off or fast forward a few years (or many) to a more experienced crime fighting family. Well, according to Lassester, it’s the former, as he says it’s a direct continuation:
“It starts right as the first one finishes, so it just carries on,” Lasseter said during an interview at D23 Expo, quipping that only “a minute” will have passed. He added, “It starts with the Underminer and a big old set piece. You know that at the end of the first movie when he comes up and you see the family dressed as superheroes, well that’s where start this movie.”
That’s very, very cool. The entire movie was setting up that final shot, as we see this incredible family in their get-ups ready to take on the Underminer. And to now know that we will see that battle take place, I’m all for it! Just as the first film was very much about family, Lasseter confirms that the sequel will do the same:
“One of the unique things about the Incredibles is it’s really a story of a family set in the world of superheroes. This one carries on that theme. It’s awesome, the idea we came up with — simple as that. … We love to really look at our own lives and look at what’s going on, and find themes that we know will resonate with the audience.”
I am absolutely loving everything I’m hearing for this sequel so far. It’s no secret the struggle that Pixar has had with most of their sequels, but it seems like they’re doing this one right. Hell, they took long enough so why wouldn’t they? These comments get me even more excited and hopeful that we’ll get a first trailer this weekend or at least a tease of some sorts. The film does hit early next summer so revealing it at the popular, fan-packed D23 makes complete sense for the studio.
With the possibility of a trailer, make sure you stay close to here at Apocaflix! as we’ll have the trailer up as soon as it becomes available. For now, let us know your thoughts on not just the comments, but your anticipation level for the sequel. Have you wanted this for years as everyone else? Did you maybe not like the first (you’re crazy if you didn’t)? The Incredibles 2 is slated for a June 15th, 2018 release.
