First ‘Jurassic World 2’ Poster Reveals the Sequel’s Official Title

Today marks the one year away mark of when we’ll see the sequel to Colin Trevorrow’s Jurassic World. And to celebrate the occasion, Universal has unveiled the first teaser poster for the film, which reveals the official title. Directed by A Monster Calls director J.A. Bayona, Jurassic Wolrd 2 is officially called Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom.

Another interesting tidbit from the poster is the tagline “Life finds a way,” which if you remember, is the famous quote from Jeff Goldblum’s character Ian Malcolm. Which is even funnier since the sequel will be bringing back Goldblum’s Malcolm. So, what does this title mean? No, really, what does this title mean? We know absolutely nothing about the sequel as it has been kept under wraps quite well so far. With the film still a year out, it makes complete sense, but hopefully with this poster release, we’ll at least be getting an official cast list and synopsis some time soon. Like say, SDCC?

Trevorrow, who brought this franchise back to life with the first Jurassic World, decided to opt out of directing the sequel, but rather stay heavily involved with the writing and creative team behind this franchise. He was also the on set writer, which means this film had two very strong directors on set on a daily basis, and that bodes very well for production. Trevorrow has described this film as a “spanish horror thriller with dinosaurs,” which quote honestly doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. But, Bayona is directing, and that makes a lot of sense. While speaking about next year’s sequel, Trevorrow said that the film will explore themes the franchise hasn’t touched yet:

“It’s definitely about our greed and the depths of depravity that humans will sink in order to satisfy their need for profit. We’re certainly continuing with a lot of those themes but in different ways. But without spoiling anything there’s definitely new themes that have never been examined in a Jurassic movie before that we’ve gotten into that I really think will expand people’s idea of what these movies can be, that it’s not just people running away from dinosaurs on an island.”

Doesn’t “it’s not just people running away from dinosaurs on an island” sound amazing? I don’t know if this will ever happen, but I would absolutely LOVE if they took this franchise in the direction of something like the new Planet of the Apes or Mad Max, where the dinosaurs are beginning to roam the Earth once again. Eventually maybe? Either way, Trevorrow made sure to let us know that he thinks the sequel will definitely be better than his own film:

“I gotta tell you man, I think that’s gonna be a better movie. I just do. It’s just deeper, it’s more character-based, it definitely leans into suspense especially in the second half. It does have the big action in the middle and there’s a sequence in the middle that I’ve been watching…I’ve started to see stuff come together and it’s just insane.”

What do you think? First off, how do you like the new title? Does the direction they’re going in sound interesting to you? Where do you hope to see this franchise go? Bayona’s Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom will stomp into theaters on June 22nd, 2018 and stars Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Toby Jones, James Cromwell, BD Wong, and Jeff Goldblum.
