It worked for the Fast & Furious franchise, when Dom Toretto was reunited with Letty, and now the Mission Impossible franchise looks to reunite Ethan Hunt with his former love interest. Director Christopher McQuarrie went to his instagram account and announced the return of Michelle Monaghan as Dr. Julia Meade.
Fans of the MI franchise will remember her from the third installment, directed by J.J. Abrams. If you haven’t seen that film, I’d highly recommend it, because it not only brought the franchise back, but introduced a new element of the Ethan Hunt character, by going into his personal life with his fiancee Julia (Monaghan). She also makes a brief cameo at the end of Ghost Protocol.
Check out the photo below, along with comments from McQuarrie on where the franchise goes in its sixth installment. Mission: Impossible 6 releases July 27, 2018, and stars Tom Cruise, Rebecca Ferguson, Henry Cavill, Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames, Vanessa Kirby, Angela Bassett, Sean Harris, and Alec Baldwin.
McQuarrie on Mission: Impossible 6, and Ethan Hunt’s arc:
“I’ve seen five of these movies and I don’t know who Ethan Hunt is. One movie sort of dealt with his personal life; the other movies are about people speculating what’s really going on in Ethan’s head. I want to know who Ethan is in this movie, I want an emotional journey for this character, and Tom really embraced it.”
His approach this time, then, was to say “‘I don’t want to string together a bunch of action scenes, I want to actually deal with character’. So I put Ethan in a bunch of complicated moral quandaries, and I’m trying to find ways to connect them – and then, ironically, the way to connect them was through giant action scenes.”
