Universal Pictures has released the first official trailer for Tom Cruise’s new film American Made. The trailer may surprise a lot of people as for the first time in a long time, Cruise ins’t playing some kind of action hero, rather a real person. Barry Seal was your everyday U.S. airline pilot, up until the CIA recruited him for covert operations, such as smuggling.
As I said, this is a role many would have thought to be in the past for the never-aging superstar. Over the last decade we’ve only seen Cruise tackle heroic roles that require a whole hell of a lot of action. Now trust me, I’m a total sucker for everything that includes Tom Cruise and action in the same sentence, but I’d be misleading you all if I didn’t say I wasn’t excited to see Cruise flaunt the kind of dramatic chops that got him to where he is today. The trailer itself focuses a bit more on the fun and comedic side of the story, very War Dogs like, but a story and character such as Barry Seal no doubt will require dramatic acting to a certain extent, something that many forget Cruise even had.
The only gripe or concern I have for the Doug Liman film is that I hope it doesn’t follow the usual trend of a normal, hard-working man becomes corrupted by the kind of power and money can bring. It seems to follow some similar beats, but Liman’s films have always brought a bit of the unexpected. Remember Edge of Tomorrow? It leaves me quite excited to see what this duo can bring to the screen this time.
Watch the debut tailer below and make sure to let me know your thoughts in the comments. Does it feel too similar? What about Cruise in a non-action role? Have you heard of Barry Seal? Liman’s American Made will be released on September 29th, 2017 and stars also stars Domhnall Gleeson, Sarah Wright, E. Roger Mitchell, Jesse Plemons, Lola Kirke, Alejandro Edda, Benito Martinez, Caleb Landry Jones and Jayma Mays.
Follows Barry Seal, a TWA pilot recruited by the CIA to provide reconnaissance on the burgeoning communist threat in Central America. Seal finds himself in charge of one of the biggest covert CIA operations in the history of the U.S., one that spawned the birth of the Medellin cartel and eventually almost brought down the Reagan White House through the Iran Contra scandal.
