Well hasn’t our Monday morning started off with a big bang! Deadline broke the news a short time ago that Sony is officially taking the long-in-development Uncharted adaptation in a whole new direction, a direction that will now star Spider-Man himself, Tom Holland, in the lead role as a young Nathan Drake!
The last time anything was reported in the big screen take on the beloved video game, it was that Joe Carnahan (The Grey, The A-Team) was in the process of penning a script for director Shawn Levy (Stranger Things, Night at the Museum). But now, as Deadline reports, Sony has decided to take the project in a drastically different direction. And apparently, Sony is so impressed with Tom Holland and his most recent time under the spider-suit that they want an entire new franchise built around him. And it couldn’t be more exciting.
For those of you who don’t know, Uncharted is basically the Indiana Jones video game. It focuses on the famous treasure hunter Nathan Drake as he explorers the world and its hidden gems. As for this take, it’s said to “take inspiration from a sequence in the third iteration of the video game that focused on the young thief Drake, and his first encounter with the professional rogue, Sullivan.”
I’ve never personally played the game, but I’ve heard nothing but fantastic things about it. Not to mention that fans have been wanting this for a very, very long time, with names such as Mark Wahlberg, Bradley Cooper, and recently Chris Pratt all being thrown into the ring for Drake. But it’s no secret that the project has had quite a rough road to the big screen. Since 2010, it has gone through more than just one or two rewrites. But with Spider-Man: Homecoming coming out in just a few months, it looks like Sony is comfortable moving forward with this idea and they’re showing all signs of hanging on to Holland for as long as they can and give not just him another strong vehicle, but hopefully themselves. And if you were able to catch Holland’s most recent film The Lost City of Z, you know that he’s more than capable of playing an explorer type character.
What do you think fans? First, do you like the new direction they’re taking the franchise? And second, how about Holland as a young Nathan Drake? Does he fit the build? Let me know in the comments! Uncharted hasn’t been given a release date as of yet.
