After a much too long wait, Sony has finally released the first official trailer for The Dark Tower, the highly anticipated adaptation of Stephen King’s best-selling books. The film stars Idris Elba as the lone Gunslinger Roland Deschain, who is on a quest to find the Dark Tower and save Mid-World from extinction before a vicious sorcerer known as the Man in Black, played by Matthew McConaughey, reaches it.
While I haven’t read the books and know close to nothing on the highly beloved book series, the tailer does a pretty fantastic job of setting up the conflict and leaving a very intriguing taste in the mouths of the non-readers. But from what I’ve read and been told, the film changes it up a bit and leaves the perspective to the eyes of young Jake Chambers, played by Tom Taylor. As the trailer reveals, Chambers has visions of another world, leading him directly to the feet of the Gunslinger and the clash between him and the Man in Black in their continuous search for the Dark Tower.
I did enjoy the trailer, I like the direction it’s taking and I can’t wait to see two actors like Elba and McConaughey face off against one another, but unfortunately the trailer feels Hollywood-ized. The one thing that always stands out about King’s work is the much darker and odder aspects of the story. This is just a trailer, but I didn’t catch a sense of those whatsoever. Those are aspects that put King’s work over the edge, elevating it to the kind of popularity it has. Hopefully the final version will feature that.
What do you think? Did you like the trailer? Are you intrigued by the idea? Directed by Nikolaj Arcel, The Dark Tower holds an August 4th, 2017 release date and stars Idris Elba, Matthew McConaughey, Katheryn Winnick, and Tom Taylor
