‘Fast & Furious’ Spinoff: Hobbs & Shaw Teaming Up?

The Fate of the Furious is showing no signs of fatigue, as the latest installment is less than $100 million away from crossing the $1 billion mark at the box office in just its second weekend in theaters. After watching Fate twice now, its become clear that Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham are the future of this franchise. The executives over at Universal Pictures have recognized this, and made plans for developing the first Fast & Furious spin-off that will focus on the two characters.

SPOILERS FOR FATE OF THE FURIOUS BELOW

Whether this spin-off comes before or after Fast 9 is unknown, but the plan is to definitely put the two best characters from Fate in their own film together. I have a tough time believing the Toretto family is just going to welcome Deckard Shaw (Statham) with open arms, after he gunned down one of their own in Tokyo. It’ll be up to franchise writer Chris Morgan to somehow find away to have more of the Shaw character in future installments, while making it feel organic. Having him save Toretto’s son near the end of the Fate is a great start to that.

Until then, teaming Hobbs and Shaw in a spin-off is a logical step for the franchise. Lastly, Variety has reported that Charlize Theron could also reprise her role as Cipher in the spin-off. The ending of Fate certainly left the door open for her character to re-emerge in later installments. Also, don’t forget that it was her character that played a major factor in having the Toretto and Shaw families face-off against each other in Furious 6 & 7, while using the Hobbs as her little puppet the entire time.

The end game of the franchise is the 10th installment, but should this first spin-off turn out great, then we can potentially get even more spin-offs. For now, I’m excited to see Johnson and Statham getting an entire film together.
