2014 featured a number of fantastic comic book properties that were brought to the big screen, such as Captain America: The Winter Soldier, X-Men: Days of Future Past, and Guardians of the Galaxy. And while each of them crushed at their own respective time, so did a little movie called Kingsman: The Secret Service. Although not technically a superhero movie, the Matthew Vaughn film was the first true R-rated comic book movie that worked, and much better than anyone expected.
So much so that the Kingsman franchise, and its star Taron Egerton, are now one of those franchises everyone gets excited for because of just how different it is. Now while that very well may be the case, its sequel Kingsman: The Golden Circle has some insanely tough competition this year. Can it rank among the greats just as its predecessor? Taking into account what we know and the following first look, I’d say it has a pretty good shot of doing so.
Entertainment Weekly debuted the first look images, which alongside returning star Egerton, reveals the looks of new cast members Channing Tatum, Halle Berry, and Jeff Bridges, who will all be involved in the Kingsman’s sister American organization, known as the Statesman. So not only will we be continuing the super spy adventures of Egerton’s Eggsy, but we’ll be getting an entire new point of view from the Americans. Here’s how Egerton described the ensemble sequel that ups the ante:
“If the first Kingsman was Captain America, then this is very much The Avengers now.”
He also continued to how his thoughts have changed and molded since the first film, with all the experience he has had since the first film debuted back in 2014:
“For the first one, I felt like if I wasn’t really good then it wouldn’t work. This time, the story still unfolds through my eyes but this is still a true ensemble piece. And also, I’ve had a bit more experience. I’m not asking the crew what every piece of camera equipment does.”
With Matthew Vaughn at the helm, I honestly don’t need to see a single image or trailer to get excited for the movie, his name is enough. But knowing what we know and now having these new images and even Egerton’s comments, The Golden Circle has the chance at being the hit comic book movie of 2017. Crazy, right? Vaughn’s Kingsman: The Golden Circle is released on September 29th, 2017 and stars Taron Egerton, Colin Firth, Channing Tatum, Jeff Bridges, Mark Strong, Halle Berry, Pedro Pascal, and Julianne Moore.
