The long-awaited big screen adaptation of Ghost in the Shell has officially arrived, and in just a matter of days, fans across the world will be able to see if filmmakers were able to succeed in getting the material right in live-action. Now to prepare fans, and those who might not be looking forward to it as much as others, the studio has released two very extended clips of the Scarlett Johansson movie, each of them focusing on two of the highlighted scenes from the trailers.
Whatever you may think or say about the casting of Johansson as Major, there’s no doubt she can embody a role like this one. She may be the top female action star on the planet right now, so bringing her in to lead this property was a very strong call for the studio, whether you like or not. We’ve seen it time and time again in the Marvel cinematic universe as her time as Black Widow, and now these clips for her next potential action franchise showcase her action prowess even more. It all depends on how the movie does at the box-office, but Johansson could have landed a multiple movie franchise.
But how does it look? From my point of view, the trailers have been well above average, specifically the second trailer. As it dove into the story a bit more, it gave a feel that felt familiar to many, such as Blade Runner, Minority Report, and more. Now I don’t know about you, but that’s a quite good comparison. We’ll have to wait until this weekend to find out if it’s able to hold up, but for myself, I’m hoping it’s able to capitalize on both fronts (box-office and reception). We don’t see many movies like this anymore (Total Recall reboot failed, although I enjoyed it), and being a sci-fi junky, I’m really pulling for it to succeed.
Check out the new clips below and after doing so, head down to the comments and let me know what you think of them. Do they help you excitement or are you still weighing your options? Rupert Sanders’ Ghost in the Shell hits theaters on March 31st, 2017 and stars Scarlett Johansson, Michael Pitt, Pilou Asbæk, Takeshi Kitano, Juliette Binoche, Kaori Momoi, and Rila Fukushima.
