Before he gets to work on Deadpool 2 with Ryan Reynolds and company, director David Leitch has another high-octane action film being released, Atomic Blonde. Atomic Blonde is based on the graphic novel “The Coldest City” and stars Charlize Theron as the most lethal assassin of Her Majesty’s Secret Intelligence Agency, Agent Lorraine Broughton. As she’s sent to Berlin to deliver a priceless dossier, she teams up with an embedded station chief, played by James McAvoy, to navigate her way through a deadly game of spies.
If the first thought that popped through your head was the comparison between Atomic Blonde and a current action king in John Wick, you are not mistaken. In fact, Leitch was co-director on the first John Wick, and after not returning for the sequel, it seems he had his eyes set on adapting the female version on the big screen. And it looks glorious. Theron has been a star for years, and has taken on dozens of fantastic roles, but as far as action goes, this kind of role/movie for her is long overdue.
She looks undoubtedly awesome in this role, and that’s both because of her ability to carry out the role and the unfair ability of Leitch to create and direct action. It’s fabulous, on all levels. Through the John Wick franchise and now the first, very red band trailer for Atomic Blonde, this is the (high) expectation we have for the director. And that doesn’t just get me insanely excited for this movie (I lost my mind over this trailer), but what it could mean for Deadpool 2. Team this kind of action with the Merc with a Mouth? Oh my god.
On a side note, I’m also quite curious why Leitch didn’t return for the John Wick sequel and rather dedicate his time to this story. Well, the trailer is a clear example as to why he wanted to do this, but it also begs another question. Did the co-directors of John Wick secretly plan out a shared universe between these two characters? Could Leitch and Chad Stahelski return behind the camera together to direct both Theron and Keanu Reeves in a crossover? It’s worth the thought.
Check out the intense first trailer below and after doing so, let me know your thoughts in the comments. Did you like it? Do you like Charlize Theron in the role? What do you think about the possibilities of a John Wick crossover? David Leitch’s Atomic Blonde hits theaters on July 28th, 2017 and stars Charlize Theron, James McAvoy, Sofia Boutella, Toby Jones, and John Goodman.
