I imagine just in time for the premiere of Logan tonight, Disney has unveiled a brand new trailer for the fifth installment of their Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales. The movie brings back Johnny Depp as the infamous Captain Jack Sparrow, who is joined by two young bucks – played by Brenton Thwaites and Kaya Scodelario – as they face off against ghost Captain Salazar – played by Javier Bardem – who’s hunting every pirate at sea.
For the first time in a few years, I’m very much looking forward to a Pirates of the Caribbean movie. Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides wasn’t a horrible movie, but it was the lowest part of the franchise by far, mainly because it put Sparrow front-and-center. With the absence of Orlando Bloom’s Will Turner and Keira Knightley’s Elizabeth Swan, the filmmakers idea of making Sparrow the main protagonist was a good one, but ultimately didn’t work because the first three movies played Sparrow as a strong and unusual supporting character who always had his own agenda and was always counter-balanced by Turner and Swan. On Stranger Tides, although the plan of bringing in a character like Blackbeard was promising, was disappointing because every other character outside of Sparrow just wasn’t that good, which in turn turned Sparrow into a different kind of jokey character.
But now with Dead Men Tell No Tales on the horizon and we getting our first true look at Depp’s Sparrow this time around, it looks like the filmmakers have gone back to what always worked and put Sparrow back in his place per say. Through two trailers thus far, we’ve only gotten a few seconds of Sparrow, which is odd in its own right, but it seems they were waiting for the big reveal in this trailer. Although it does feature the most of the character to this point, the trailer stills does a great job of painting Thwaites and Scodelario as the main protagonists, or in other words, the two character that help balance out Jack, a la Will Turner and Elizabeth Swan. Add that to a great looking villain, one who has a personal tie to Jack, and this new pirates life adventure looks more promising than we all originally thought.
Take a look at the new trailer below and after doing so, head down to the comments and let us know your thoughts. How do you feel about the new characters? Does it look like old Pirates? Are you a fan of Johnny Depp’s Captain Jack? Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales sails into theaters May 26th, 2017 and stars Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom, Brenton Thwaites, Kaya Scodelario, Kevin McNally, Javier Bardem, and Geoffrey Rush.
Thrust into an all-new adventure, a down-on-his-luck Captain Jack Sparrow finds the winds of ill-fortune blowing even more strongly when deadly ghost pirates led by his old nemesis, the terrifying Captain Salazar (Bardem), escape from the Devil’s Triangle, determined to kill every pirate at sea…including him. Captain Jack’s only hope of survival lies in seeking out the legendary Trident of Poseidon, a powerful artifact that bestows upon its possessor total control over the seas.
