About a month ago, an exciting new rumor regarding the next X-Men film suddenly appeared. An unofficial plot and title called Supernova revealed the new young X-Men team coming face to face with a dark cosmic entity in the form of one of their own: Jean Grey. Grey’s Dark Phoenix powers were heavily teased in last year’s X- Men: Apocalypse, and by the sound of that plot synopsis (which you can see below), she will once again unleash her powers, this time against her own kind,
Gathered together by Professor Charles Xavier to protect a world that fears and hates them, the X-Men had fought many battles, been on adventures that spanned galaxies, grappled enemies of limitless might, but none of this could prepare them for the most shocking struggle they would ever face. One of their own members, Jean Grey, has gained power beyond all comprehension, and that power has corrupted her absolutely! Now they must decide if the life of the woman they cherish is worth the existence of the entire universe!
Instantly, I checked the source (My Entertainment World) and brushed off this rumored title and plot. Further exploring Jean Grey’s character arc in the aftermath of Apocalypse made sense, however taking into consideration the unreliable source, and the fact that we’ve heard very little development regarding a new X-Men film made it highly unlikely there was any truth to the rumor. That was however until something else dropped earlier this week.
During a recent chat with HeyUGuys at the 2017 BAFTAS, Sophie Turner confirmed she’ll be doing another X- Men film very soon:
“We’re about to start shooting the next X-Men, we’ve just finished shooting Season 7 of [Game of] Thrones, and I’ve got a couple of movies to do before X-Men starts. And then we go on to Season 8! So I’ve got a busy year lined up.”
In case you skipped Apocalyse, Turner played a young Jean Grey. Her performance, along with the remainder of the young cast portraying younger versions of the core X- Men team (Cyclops, Storm, Nightcrawler, Jubilee), was excellent, and made me excited for the future of X-Men. I fully expect the entire cast from Apocalypse (minus Jennifer Lawrence) to return. As for the storyline, the further proof that screenwriter Simon Kinberg is following up Apocalypse with The Dark Phoenix saga, two major storylines in a row, is ambitious to say the least. Though consider me excited, especially after Turner stole the show as Jean Grey in Apocalypse.
This now begs the question, could a new X-Men film be on the way? It’s all but certain, seeing as the franchise has been such a smash hit at the box office for nearly two decades. 20th Century Fox is definitely thinking life after Logan. A sequel to Deadpool will begin filming this spring, and soon after the Josh Boone (The Fault in Our Stars) directed New Mutants, will X-Men: Supernova make it three films starting production this year? Time will tell, and after hearing Turner’s comments, I’m expecting some major X-Men announcements soon.
