The adaptation of the global phenomenon Ghost in the Shell is one of the more interesting movies in early 2017. When it was first announced fans everywhere went absolutely bonkers, where they would finally get a chance to see their favorite manga on the big screen. That was followed with the news of Scarlett Johansson being cast in the lead role of Major, which started an uproar of white-washing controversy. But then, the first trailer was released and most (not all) “haters” were silenced because of how the film look. Now, just a bit over a month before its release, a brand new trailer has dropped and seemingly shut the critics up.
Okay, I wouldn’t say it necessarily shit the critics up, but it’s a much better trailer than the first, one that no doubt surprised a number of people, including myself. What I like about what I saw from the footage is just how different it looks. It looks like a good balance between the worlds created in Blade Runner, Minority Report, and a few other major sci-fi movies in history. And what I’ll mention just a little bit because it’s obvious, but Johansson looks kick-ass as the character of Major. Which again, is obvious.
The big elephant in the room is the whole “white-washing” thing going on. Sure, people around the world who loved this story wanted to see a true Asian actress the the spotlight in this role, but would that have worked? Having Johansson in the role brings in a HUGE audience. She was 2016’s most paid actress, she’s going to bring in monster numbers for a property that is very well unknown to the majority of the public. Instead of bagging on the movie and the casting choice it made, why not think of it positively and how it brings another major female lead to the forefront? If this first movie does well, we could be seeing Johansson suit up as Major for many years to come.
