Warner Bros. has finally given us a legitimate update on the development status for Green Lantern Corps. Mind you, the movie is still more than three full years away from its 2020 release, but like many of you I’m anxious to erase away the disaster that is the Ryan Reynolds led film from a few years ago.
It’s been officially announced that Green Lantern Corps will be written by David S. Goyer (The Dark Knight Trilogy) and up and coming writer Justin Rhodes (Guillermo Del Toro’s Fantastic Voyage remake). Described as “Lethal Weapon in space,” the movie will focus on two of the most popular characters in the Green Lantern comics, Hal Jordan and Jon Stewart.
While it’s great to finally see some progress with this movie, I’m not a huge fan of one named David S. Goyer. As a writer, his resume will seem very impressive, especially with credits on Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy. However, take a closer look and you’ll find that both Chris Nolan and his brother Jonathan Nolan were heavily involved in writing those scripts. The same goes for Man of Steel, a film that many view as Zack Snyder’s best work.
Taking those films out of Goyer’s resume, and we’re left with Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, The Blade Trilogy, and The Crow: City of Angels. It’s clear to me that he’s not a great writer (a successful one, sure), yet his strong relationship with Warner Bros. likely earned him script duties on the Green Lantern Corps. I will say that Goyer can come up with some really good ideas and concepts, but it’s also about the structure and development of character, both of which he struggles in. Hopefully his involvement is kept to a minimum. Otherwise, I can already see re-writes happening in this film’s near future.
As for Justin Rhodes co-writing alongside Goyer, I’m curious to see what kind of take he’ll bring to this buddy cop flick set in space. My excitement for his involvement remains on how the Fantastic Voyage remake turns out. It’s great to see Green Lantern Corps moving forward, but my expectations are tempered for now. Green Lantern Corps is scheduled for July 24th, 2020.
