2017 is finally here, and while there are movies coming out left and right every month this year, Marvel titles always seem to make the list. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is the one that’s closest, which is AWESOME, but one that may surprise people about how excited they actually are is Thor: Ragnarok. Out of all the solo Marvel adventures, to this point, the Thor franchise is on the lower spectrum, but that will all change this November. Expectations for Ragnarok are enormous, and that may have just been raised now that an official synopsis has been revealed.
While there are so many parts to Ragnarok, the piece that sticks out the most is that Mark Ruffalo will be co-starring alongside Chris Hemsworth, as his Thor will be partnered up with Ruffalo’s Hulk, marking the first time we’ll see the Green Goliath outside an Avengers movie. Quite frankly, we don’t need a how or why Hulk is teaming up with Thor, the fact that it’s happening gets us all kinds of giddy. But because it’s reality and we do need a reason, here’s how director Taika Waititi will bring these two beloved characters together:
In Marvel Studios’ Thor: Ragnarok, Thor is imprisoned on the other side of the universe without his mighty hammer and finds himself in a race against time to get back to Asgard to stop Ragnarok—the destruction of his homeworld and the end of Asgardian civilization—at the hands of an all-powerful new threat, the ruthless Hela. But first he must survive a deadly gladiatorial contest that pits him against his former ally and fellow Avenger—the Incredible Hulk!
Let me just get this out of the way, HELL YES. Okay, bring it back… Just as we’ve speculated for the last forever long, Thor: Ragnarok will be loosely pulling parts from the popular “Planet Hulk” comic book storyline, which found Hulk fighting as a Gladiator in distant space. From the sounds of it, we’ll be seeing both Thor and Hulk take place in these gladiatorial matches, only difference is it’ll be against each other!
We’ve only gotten a few decent looks at the film so far (unless you were in Hall H last summer for a little footage tease, damn you!) and now with this synopsis release, Ragnarok is starting to sound like a complete shift from what the Thor franchise has been, mostly tonally. All the pieces it has sounds like a huge opportunity for Waititi to have an incredible amount of fun, which now makes Marvel’s hiring of Waititi for this specific franchise an movie a lot more sense.
Some other things to keep in mind for Ragnarok is that we finally get Tom Hiddleston’s Loki back after quite an absence, Indris Elba’s Heimdall, and we’ll finally find out what the hell has happened to Anthony Hopkins’ Odin. On top of that, we’ll be introduced to Cate Blanchett and her villainous Hela – who will literally be bring down Ragnarok on Asgard – Jeff Goldblum’s Grandmaster – a cosmic being who’s one of the Elders of the universe – Karl Urban’s Skurge – a villainous Agrarian warrior who is more than likely working for Hela – and finally Tessa Thompson’s Valkyrie – one of the long-awaited Asgardian characters to be brought to the big screen. Once again, Ragnarok‘s expectations are massive!
What do you think? Does the synopsis get you even more excited? How pumped are you to see Thor and Hulk face-off? Where does Ragnarok fall on this year’s most anticipated list? Taika Waititi’s Thor: Ragnarok hits theaters November 3rd, 2017 and stars Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Tom Hiddleston, Cate Blanchett, Jef Goldblum, Karl Urban, Tessa Thompson, Idris Elba, and Anthony Hopkins.
