A handful of weeks back, the upcoming Tomb Raider landed their leading lady to play the famous treasure hunter Lara Croft, Alicia Vikander. The video game movie possibly couldn’t have gone in a better direction, locking down an Oscar-winning actress for a potential blockbuster franchise. But now that the reboot has its Lara Croft, it is now looking to cast other major roles, starting with its villain.
Variety first broke the news early yesterday that Walter Goggins has been cast as the villain opposite Vikander in the Tomb Raider reboot. No other details have been revealed outside of the casting. Goggins, of course, is probably best known for his roles in some of the most recent Quentin Tarantino films, including Django Unchained and The Hateful Eight, as well as his comfortability with any kind of all around bad guy role. With the reveal of Goggins joining the cast, expect to see more casting announcements in the near future.
When the film was first announced earlier this year, it was heavily speculated that the story would be highly inspired by the most recent 2013 video game. In that story, we see a younger Lara Croft in what’s her origin story. With the casting of Vikander, it only plays into that more. With Croft being a treasure hunter, it only makes sense for her antagonists to be very wealthy rivals or some kind of billionaire looking to hunt down some lost treasure, but luckily the recent games have veered away from that structure and given fans a much more diverse set of foes. And with Tomb Raider producer Graham King saying that this reboot will focus on “a young Lara Croft in search to see if her father is dead or alive,” it’s good to keep in mind that Goggins’ role could very well be linked to Croft’s father, possibly one who turned against him.
Tomb Raider, which will be directed by Roar Uthaug, has a set March 16th, 2018, meaning the studio will be looking to shoot the film some time next Spring. Are you looking forward to a new Tomb Raider? How about the cast so far? What do you hope to see?
