‘The Fate of the Furious’ First Trailer Reveals a Turned Dominic Toretto

Well folks, after a week long tease, Universal has released the first official trailer for the upcoming eight, damn right, eight installment in the Fast & Furious franchise, titled The Fate of the Furious. When the film was announced and the cast was revealed, it was originally thought that Dom and his team of the world’s best drivers would be (re)facing off against Jason Statham’s Deckard Shaw who has teamed up with a new, dangerous ally in Charlize Theron’s Cipher. But as you watch the trailer you, find out that that is very much not the case.

Right off the bat, something that must be talked about. If you thought that this franchise couldn’t go bigger than parachuting cars out of a cargo plane or jumping the world’s fastest car between three high-rise buildings in Dubai, man were you and I and everyone else flat-out wrong. Not only does the new trailer feature a ton of new, gigantic stunts that we’ve yet to see in the franchise, but these movies have now gone from cars to freaking submarines! Tanks, submarines, one insanely awesome prison break, and a huge wrecking ball doing some major damage. The Fate of the Furious looks MASSIVE.

The other thing that must be talked about is what this franchise has been centered around from the very beginning, family. Time and time again these movies have focused solely on family, which gets the team out of sticky situations and even more importantly, gives them one-of-a-kind motivation to (successfully) accomplish everything they do. But now, that’s all at stake with Dom (apparently) going rogue and facing off against his ride or die family. The new dynamic F. Gary Gray has come up with has given new life to the franchise, leaving something incredibly emotional for fans to attach to while also committing to the physical “I’m going to blow up as much shit as I possibly can” mentality that has made the series what it is today. While it may look ridiculous on so many levels, it’s exactly what we all hoped for for an eight Fast & Furious movie.

Take a long, eye-popping look at the first trailer below, and please, please don’t forget to let us know your thoughts in the comments section below. Are you a franchise fan? What did you think of the trailer? What about Dom’s turn? F. Gary Gray’s The Fate of the Furious smashes into theaters on April 14th, 2017 and stars Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, Charlize Theron, Jason Statham, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Ludacris, Nathalie Emmanuel, Elsa Pataky and Kurt Russell.

Now that Dom and Letty are on their honeymoon and Brian and Mia have retired from the game—and the rest of the crew has been exonerated—the globetrotting team has found a semblance of a normal life.  But when a mysterious woman (Oscar® winner Charlize Theron) seduces Dom into the world of crime he can’t seem to escape and a betrayal of those closest to him, they will face trials that will test them as never before.

From the shores of Cuba and the streets of New York City to the icy plains off the arctic Barents Sea, our elite force will crisscross the globe to stop an anarchist from unleashing chaos on the world’s stage…and to bring home the man who made them a family.
