Sony has released a brand new trailer, and clip, for their upcoming sci-fi film Passengers. The film is directed by The Imitation Game helmer Morten Tyldum and stars Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt as two passengers aboard a spaceship that is traveling towards a new life on a new planet when they are suddenly awakened 90 years too early from deep sleep, eventually realizing they may have woken up for a reason.
Unlike most of film these days, especially the sci-fi drama, Passengers is an original screenplay not based on prior work. The script was initially written by Prometheus writer John Spaihts a handful of years ago, with it sitting in limbo until Tyldum jumped on board following the complete success of The Imitation Game with Benedict Cumberbatch back in 2014.
The new trailer really plays that this could be Titanic set decades in the future and in space, as it stars two of the biggest names today that everyone wants to see. An epic romance between two star-crossed lovers who are aboard a ship that (looks like) will meet its doom in a massive crash. The only difference is that everyone but two are in hyper-sleep, with nothing but endless miles of space outside their windows.
I’ve enjoyed everything I’ve seen from the film so far. While nothing has blown me away, I’m a huge fan of The Imitation Game, which gives me great confidence in Tyldum’s ability to execute a film like this. While much greater in spectacle and size, it really only focuses on two characters, and characters were a massive strength on The Imitation Game. I’m pretty confident in the chemistry between Lawrence and Pratt as they are two of the best personalities in Hollywood today. What I’m still interested to see is how their story/relationship plays out through the course of the film. Will it be too campy or drive the film?

How about Lawrence and Pratt as co-stars? Morton Tyldum’s Passengers hits theaters December 21st, 2016 and stars Jennifer Lawrence, Chris Pratt, Michael Sheen, and Laurence Fishburne.
Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt are two passengers onboard a spaceship transporting them to a new life on another planet. The trip takes a deadly turn when their hibernation pods mysteriously wake them 90 years before they reach their destination. As Jim and Aurora try to unravel the mystery behind the malfunction, they begin to fall for each other, unable to deny their intense attraction… only to be threatened by the imminent collapse of the ship and the discovery of the truth behind why they woke up.
