After quite a long wait, the first official trailer for the long-awaited Ghost in the Shell adaptation is now online. Scarlett Johansson stars in the film as Major, a special ops, one-of-a-kind human-cyborg who leads the elite task force Section 9 tasked with stopping the most dangerous criminals and extremists. The adaptation brings to life the internationally acclaimed manga, and while I’m very unfamiliar with the property, I’ve read that the film is also taking inspiration from the animated movies and series.
If anything, the trailer showcases a bundle of visuals that are just off the charts, with Johansson’s human-cyborg in the center of that conversation. And although the trailer does give off a very heavy action oriented vibe, many have gone on record stating that they’re going for much more than just another sci-fi action film. I truly hope that’s the case, for two reasons. One being the fans of the property. If this manga was written 5 years ago, the film would probably be out already. Fans have waited over 20 years to see this property come to life, and to just turn it into another sci-fi action movie would be a true shame. The second reason is its word of mouth. I’ve heard nothing but fantastic things about these stories and the character of Major. So again, resulting to another big budget, Hollywood action movie would be an extreme disappointment.
But with a name and truly powerful female lead like Scarlett Johansson (who knows how to pick scripts), I do have faith in Ghost in the Shell at the moment. Did I love the trailer? No. But it did its job by peeking my interest and getting me to want to see more and ultimately, watch this movie on the biggest screen possible. Not only am I always down for a Johansson led action movie, but I’m always down for sci-fi and something outside the box, and this very long-awaited adaptation looks to be just that.
Watch the new trailer below and let us know your thoughts in the comments. Did you read the manga or see the animated features? What about the trailer? What did or didn’t you like about it?
