‘Uncharted’ Movie (Finally) Moving Forward with Director Shawn Levy

After years and years of trying to get a film adaptation made, Sony is finally moving forward with the long-awaited Uncharted movie. A decade’s worth of live-action action adventure video game titles have passed by with the Uncharted franchise possibly being the most popular and most sought out, but never having a Shawn Levyreal push behind it. But with the game series getting its fourth installment earlier this year, Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, Sony has found a director and is finally moving forward with the project.

Deadline has revealed that Sony has tapped Shawn Levy to direct the first big screen adaptation of famed explorer and treasure hunter Nathan Drake. Levy is known for his involvement in Netflix’s Stranger Things and directing such movies as the Night at the Museum franchise and Real Steel. As for the script, its last draft was turned in by previous attached director Joe Carnahan, who has now moved on to direct Bad Boys for Life. No casting announcements have been made yet, but expect to see them soon as it’s being reporting that Sony is fast-tracking the project.

As for Levy, he’s been quite busy lately with his producing credits. I mentioned his involved in Stranger Things above, but he also produced Denis Villeneuve’s upcoming original sci-fi film Arrival, which many are calling this year’s best film. Levy hasn’t directed a movie since 2014s Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb, and while you may be pondering the idea of that director helming a project like Uncharted, the family friendly action comedy franchise is actually a pretty good start. Minus the fact that Nathan Drake kills (more on a Indiana Jones level), the games have a sense of adventure aimed towards those who watch Night at the Museum. Add Levy’s flair from his other projects and I’d say Sony found the guy who will be able to tackle the fantastic mythology, both characters and narrative, that is Uncharted.

Now that you’ve heard my thoughts, jump in the comments and let me know what you think below. Do you play the games? How long have you wanted to see this movie get made? What about Levy directing? Who do you want to see play Nathan Drake? Uncharted currently has no release date.
