I’m not sure about you, but the latest adventure from Captain Kirk and the crew of the Enterprise was quite enjoyable. It was a fantastic blend of old and new, but unfortunately it wasn’t as successful at the box-office as it was with fans and critics. Although its performance can be so-called “lackluster,” Paramount officially announced a fourth movie before Star Trek Beyond was even released, meaning it’s more than likely going to happen. Star Trek 4 will have Chris Pine’s Kirk crossing paths with a man he never knew/met, but someone who’s had a huge impact on his life, his father.
We had a brief time with George Kirk back in J.J Abrams’ 2009 Star Trek, which was portrayed by Chris Hemsworth. And although it was so brief, Hemsworth’s Kirk not only made an impact on fans and critics, but on the series as his actions in the opening act was a defining moment in the series. And that’s exactly why it makes complete sense that Abrams (who is now acting as executive producer) wants to bring back the character for Star Trek 4. But it also doesn’t hurt that since then, Hemsworth has become this mega-star (thanks to Marvel), a mega-star that will bring in the box-office results that Beyond was missing.
Pine, who will be co-leading Star Trek 4 opposite Hemsworth, recently sat down with The Huffington Post and revealed his thoughts on Hemsworth returning to the franchise:
It’s such a trip that, in the first one, Chris [Hemsworth] had such a small but super important part and he knocked it out of the park. He’s only on screen for so little time and he’s really emotionally the centerpiece of that film. I’ve only really seen him a couple times since then strangely, so it would be fun to reunite with him. I was honestly quite happy where the end of that father-son storyline ended, but I’d be happy to work with Chris again. He’s a great actor and a really nice man.
With the unfortunate unimpressive results from Justin Lin’ Beyond, there’s no doubt that many at Paramount were a bit hesitant towards the idea of a fourth installment. But Abrams is one who is not only hoping, but pushing for Star Trek 4, referring to its story as his favorite of the rebooted stories so far:
One of the reasons that I’m hoping [Star Trek Beyond] does well is so that we can, without question, get that movie made. It really is an amazing story. It’s really the reason we made the deal with Chris Hemsworth as soon as we could because we really wanted that story to be told, so fingers crossed.
While there’s a good chance Hemsworth’s stardom will overtake the fourth installment, Pine seems excited and very open to the idea of him returning. One of the biggest elements of this modern day franchise is its time-traveling aspect, and bringing back Kirk’s father definitely plays into that in a big way. Star Trek 4 currently has no release date and Star Trek Beyond is released on Blu-ray and DVD November 1st, 2016.
