Legendary Pictures and Universal Studios have released a new trailer for their upcoming action/adventure/fantasy film The Great Wall, from Hero and House of Flying Daggers director Zhang Yimou. The Great Wall serves as Yimou’s first English-language directed film, as well as being the largest film to ever be shot entirely in China. It stars Matt Damon in a story that’s set 1,000 years in the past that follows an elite force who’s making a valiant stand for humanity atop the world’s most iconic structure.
When the first trailer dropped for The Great Wall, it didn’t feature any major story details, which allowed many to come out swinging and bash the film, creating an entire white-washing controversy around it. “Why is Matt Damon in this film?” Much of the criticism revolved around the film pumping up the white savior trope. While this trailer doesn’t necessarily address that, nor will people walk away with a different look, I don’t think this film deserves that. It’s all in the footage. Damon isn’t playing a legendary Chinese warrior or a character with a Chinese background, he’s playing a distant traveler who lands at the wall looking for a weapon. This isn’t as bad as Exodus: Gods and Kings, so why is it that it seems to be getting more hate?
Anyway, back to the trailer. I’ll be honest, this trailer kicked an enormous amount of ass. I was so into it from start to finish. Not only am I seriously interested in the story, but the visuals are stunning. The way Yimou is able to capture certain moments (slow motion arrow and balls of fire) is a spectacle, it’s incredibly to look at. The action just looks massive and the idea behind the film screams epic. Unexpectedly, I’m now pretty damn excited to see what The Great Wall has in store for us early next year.
