If you’re a fan of the original 90s Power Rangers television show, this new Power Rangers might not be for you. Ever wonder what a more serious, grittier, updated of the classic show would look like? The following trailer has your answer. Just as promised, Lionsgate released the first trailer for Power Rangers earlier this morning as part of New York Comic Con, and it will definitely raise an eyebrow or two.
If you’re unfamiliar with the property, the story centers around five teenagers who, after coming into contact with alien technology, are gifted with superpowers. Director Dean Israelite is coming off a pretty successful young adult film in Project Almanac, with this new trailer drawing heavy vibes from that movie. But given the superhero angle, Power Rangers resembles Josh Trank’s Chronicle almost identically, and that is not a bad thing. It’s basically Chronicle in a Power Rangers suit, minus the found footage factor, and it really works. While the trailer didn’t feature any morphin’, in my opinion, it did exactly what it was suppose to and draw the audience in. Sure, we’ll be going to see this movie for the kick-ass, updated action (hopefully), but it’s nice to see a movie with a name like Power Rangers have the confidence in releasing a trailer that features no action inside the suit. There’s something to say about that.
As for the story, I’m in to it for now. There’s not a whole lot to go off of as of right now, but I like the almost Breakfast Club aspect they’re mixing in there. And I’m very interested in seeing how these young actors work together, especially since every one of them is unknown (for now). So, will this approach work for Power Rangers? Only time will tell. But going off of this trailer, I think the modern take on this classic property is off to a pretty solid start, one that will perk up a lot more ears than originally thought.
