Solo Batman Movie Now Has a Title; Ben Affleck Talks Why He Wanted Deathstroke as the Villain

Since the day Ben Affleck was announced as Batman, rumors and speculation have run rampant with what the possibilities are for the character and the larger universe he operates in. Will Affleck direct? Will he executive produce all the movies? What will his Dark Knight be like? Until earlier today, all we had was Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and the confirmation that Affleck with indeed be directing the Batmansolo Batman movie, with the latter only being revealed recently. But now, thanks to Affleck beginning his press tour for Gavin O’Connor’s The Accountant, we have a few more details on Affleck’s The Batman.

During a video interview (which you can see below) with The Associated Press, Affleck revealed the title of his highly anticipated standalone film with the following:

“The movie I think is going to be called The Batman. At least that’s what we’re going with right now. I might change it… That’s about all I got right now. We’re working on the script, the script is going well, I’m really excited about it.”

The Batman title has been up and back the rumor mill for years now, with Affleck finally confirming the title this morning. And while it seems quite simple, especially compared to Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight or even Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel, it’s very fitting. Why give us a big title with a hidden meaning? Just give us a kick ass movie, that’s all we want.

Affleck himself has been quite busy lately, as he’s been wrapping up on Zack Snyder’s Justice League and putting the finishing touches on the his very long-awaited Argo follow-up Live by Night, but he’s deathstroke-batman-moviealso laying the outline for The Batman as both writer and director. It was recently revealed that Joe Manganiello will be bringing DC’s greatest assassin to the DCEU as Deathstroke is set to be Batman’s foil in The Batman. Now, during his same press tour for The AccountantCollider‘s Steve Weintraub sat down with Affleck, and during the conversation, naturally, asked what it was about Deathstroke that made him right for the villain role:

“He’s a great villain because—I just had an instinctive feeling that he would match up with him well. You know, I’m a big admirer of that character as well, especially in the New 52 the way that they did Deathstroke, and I thought that it could work.”

With Affleck’s mention of the character DC’s New 52, he could be hinting that Manganiello’s Slade Wilson will in fact do exactly what Affleck’s Bruce Wayne did, return to the suit following an event that forces him to do so. That would be damn interesting! Two old and grizzled men returning to their craft following decades of their so-called “glory days” (more so for Batman, not a murderous mercenary). That provides a very grounded, dark, and gritty storyline for The Batman, one very fitting for Affleck’s Batman. It also makes Manganiello’s casting as Deathstroke much more suitable for the direction they’re going, if in fact that’s the direction they’re going.

Now we want to know what you think. Do you like the title? Too simple? What about Deathstroke taking on Bats in The Batman? Ben Affleck’s The Batman currently has no release date, but is expected to hits theaters some time in 2018.
