Ever since he amazed audiences and critics with his powerful performance in David Fincher’s The Social Network, Andrew Garfield has become a rising actor in Hollywood. Many felt that performance deserved Oscar recognition, and as the years have passed since, Garfield has continued to give one exceptional performance after another, regardless of the quality of the films overall. Say what you will about his version of Peter Parker/Spider-Man, but I think we can all agree that Garfield’s performance and dedication to the character deserved a better franchise. Believe it or not, there are some out there who believe The Amazing Spider-Man 2 badly hurt his career, and caused him to struggle finding work in Hollywood. To that I say, get ready for Garfield to make a major comeback this Oscars season.
In my opinion, no actor on paper is more favored to win the gold statue this year, than Andrew Garfield. If you’ve seen films like The Social Network or 99 Homes, then you know how great of a performance he’s capable of giving. However, I think the best has yet to come. Yes, its been a few years since audiences have seen him on the big screen. However, that’s because he’s been busy working on two separate films with a couple Oscar winning directors by the names of Martin Scorsese and Mel Gibson.
The first film is Silence which is directed by Scorsese. The film co-stars Garfield, Adam Driver, and Liam Neeson as 17th century priests who travel to Japan to minister Christians who’ve been outlawed. Its a project unlike anything Scorsese’s done in the past 20 years, and something he’s long considered to be a passion project. The second film is Hacksaw Ridge which is directed by Gibson. In this film, Garfield takes the lead role as Desmond T. Doss, a WWII medic who was criticized for refusing to bear arms, and later saved 75 soldiers in the Battle of Okinawa. Anyone familiar with Gibson’s film making talents know that he can deliver a war picture unlike any other. Plus, we all know how much the Academy loves true stories dramas, especially ones based on real war events.
The time has come for everyone to realize how talented and consistent of an actor Garfield is. As we enter this year’s Oscars season, he is my early front runner for some type of acting award. Call me crazy, but I also predicted Leo’s Oscars win two February’s ago.
Silence releases limited in theaters on December 23rd, 2016
Hacksaw Ridge releases on November 4th, 2016
