Ben Affleck is one hot commodity right now. Obviously, he’s under the biggest spotlight as Warner Bros. new caped crusader for DC and their ever-building Extended Universe. But what many of the average movie-going audience doesn’t realize is how talented of a director the Batfleck is. While my personal favorite is his last outing in Argo, many also recognize him from the Boston set The Town. And although those two films are outstanding, many believe that his directorial debut is his best film, one that his brother starred in rather than himself, Gone Baby Gone. So whatever you may think about Affleck as an actor or anything outside of that, there’s no denying the guy knows how to make high-level films.
That’s exactly why Live by Night, a film that’s been in the works for a while now, has had so much anticipation around it without seeing much of anything. The fact that Affleck wrote it and directed it, that’s enough for us to get excited. Based on Dennis Lehane’s novel of the same name, Live by Night takes place during the Prohibition era and follows Affleck’s Joe Coughlin as he works his way up from bootlegger to notorious Florida gangster.
We’ve been waiting for a film like Live by Night for a damn long time now, with multiple failed attempts coming before it (oh poor Gangster Squad…). And luckily for us, it looks like it will be well worth that wait. While the trailer is lite on story, it does promise that the crime drama will feature a ton of its own kind of style and swagger. And it’ll definitely be fun to see Affleck play a man who runs on the wrong side of the law for once. Hopefully a second trailer will give us more of the story, showing us just how much it will stand apart from other crime dramas.
Watch the first trailer below, and let us know your thoughts in the comments. What do you think of Affleck as a director? How have you liked his previous work? Did the trailer grab you? Live by Night has a limited December release date and expands on January 13th, 2017. It stars Ben Affleck, Elle Fanning, Brendan Gleeson, Chris Messina, Sienna Miller, Zoe Saldana, and Chris Cooper.
