Industrial Light & Magic, or better known as ILM, are the special effect magicians behind such films as Pacific Rim, Tomorrowland, Jurassic World, Captain America: Civil War, and have also been involved in the Star Wars franchise from the very beginning way back in 1977 with A New Hope. Now being just months away from the first ever Star Wars spinoff, ILM is putting the final touches on Gareth Edwards’ Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, a movie that will no doubt be a huge deal come December.
Now because we’ve been tragically held without a Star Wars film for nearly 10 months now, ILM has released a VFX video breaking down some of The Force Awakens‘ most striking moments, some of which left die-hard fans in tears. Most VFX breakdowns are pretty standard, but when it comes to ILM, it’s by far a much more dynamic process. Aside from pre and post VFX with the standard music soundtrack layover, ILM includes time lapses, animation, and sound effects in their breakdown to show how they layered the film with CGI. And it’s quite glorious. Everything from Finn and Poe fighting their way out out the First Oder Star Destroyer to the epic, climactic lightsaber duel between Rey and Kylo Ren, check it out in the featurette below.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens is available on Blu-ray and DVD and Gareth Edwards’ Rogue One: A Star Wars Story hits theaters this winter on December 16th, 2016.
