No matter how divisive (and for some disappointing) DC’s films may turn out, they still manage to get everyone excited for what’s to come. Today, a report has come out that states Warner Bros is developing a sequel for Man of Steel 2. According to the report, the studio is making the sequel a “top priority”, after the opening weekend box office success of Suicide Squad. All I can say is, its about damn time!
For all of Zack Snyder‘s flaws regarding his work on Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, I thought he did something amazing with 2013’s Man of Steel. The visuals were unlike anything I’ve seen in a Superman movie. The movie itself is pure brilliance. From the opening scene showing the birth of Kal-El on planet Krypton, to the climatic battle with General Zod, where Superman is faced with making a difficult decision that will surely have consequences.
Sooner or later, I think we all knew a Man of Steel 2 was coming. Although this report isn’t considered solid confirmation that a sequel is arriving, its a relief to hear the studio getting the wheels turning. This report also happens to arrive just two weeks after Geoff Johns was named President of DC Entertainment. I’m willing to bet he had a hand in fast tracking the sequel into development. No release date has been announced, or even hinted, and I suspect it’ll be sometime before the studio confirms this.
WHAT TO EXPECT IN MAN OF STEEL 2.
Its pretty much guaranteed that Snyder won’t be returning to direct the sequel. The filmmaker is currently in the middle of production on Justice League, and unless that film is a unanimous hit with critics and a box office success, his directing duties for the DCEU will end there. Also, without Snyder directing we can expect a much different film from a visual standpoint.
Man of Steel 2 will also show us a Superman who is loved by everyone (not named Lex Luthor Jr). Snyder spent most of his films putting the character in a difficult position, where saving people meant accepting consequences that came with it. For myself, I loved that because it translates exactly how our real world would react to an alien, who if he wanted to, could burn the whole place down. At the end of Batman v Superman, we witness Superman finally being accepted as the hero who made a sacrifice to destroy an unstoppable monster. This sets up his grand return in Justice League, which is sure to get us pumped for Man of Steel 2.
As for the villain, I’m personally hoping to see Jesse Eisenberg reprise his role as Lex Luthor Jr. Maybe the writers can tone his character down a bit, but in the end, Eisenberg sold me as the young, scrawny, but genius billionaire. As for the physical threat who can actually fight Supes, rumors in the past included characters like Brainiac and Bizzaro, who are both the next most known villains in the comics after Lex and Zod.
Who would you like to see as the villain in Man of Steel 2? Would you be open to Zack Snyder returning, if Justice League was a smash hit?
