Just a couple of weeks ago it was reported that a sequel to Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them was not only the works, but that it would take this franchise in a whole new direction. Fast forward to this morning and that report has become official, as Warner Bros. has announced a sequel to the highly anticipated Harry Potter spinoff.
WB announced this morning that the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them sequel will be released on November 16th, 2018. The date was previously held by “Untitled WB Event Film #1 (2018)” and a Fantastic Beasts sequel no doubt fits that bill. Unless the first in a massive bomb, this was a no-brainer for the studio. The Harry Potter franchise was one of the most successful franchises for WB in recent memory. And because Potter-heads are so loyal and die-hard, Fantastic Beasts will definitely bring in that kind of success, even if it’s not to that extent.
This news definitely comes to no surprise after learning that J.K. Rowling has already turned in a script for the sequel, which will continue to follow the adventures of Eddie Redmayne’s magizoologist Newt Scamander. Alongside the sequel date, WB announced that David Yates will be returning to direct. Yates, of course, is known for being behind the camera of the final four Harry Potter movies, which were extremely successful. So it’s also a no-brainer for WB to lock up Yates for as many movies in this universe as they can. Yates, who has already seen the sequel’s script, had this to say about Rowling’s work:
“We’ve seen the script for Part 2, for the second movie, which takes the story in a whole new direction – as you should, you don’t want to repeat yourself. The second movie introduces new characters as she builds this part of the Harry Potter universe further. It’s a very interesting development from where we start out. The work is pouring out of her.”
It will be interesting to see what kind of spin Rowling and Yates put on this side of the wizarding world. Although it is the Potter universe, it takes place decades before his time. What’s the world like? How’s the relationship between magic and muggle? I was excited when I heard they were doing this spinoff, but the trailers and footage I’ve seen have amplified that more than I expected. It clearly gives off the Potter vibe we all know and love so much, but differentiates itself just enough to get us very interested in this brand new adventure.
David Yates’ Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them opens November 18th, 2016 and stars Eddie Redmayne, Katherine Waterston, Alison Sudol, Dan Fogler, Colin Farrell, Ezra Miller, Samantha Morton, Ron Perlman, and Jon Voight.
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is an all-new adventure returning us to the wizarding world created by J.K. Rowling. Academy Award winner Eddie Redmayne stars in the central role of wizarding world magizoologist Newt Scamander, under the direction of David Yates, who helmed the last four “Harry Potter” blockbusters. The film opens in 1926 as Newt Scamander has just completed a global excursion to find and document an extraordinary array of magical creatures. Arriving in New York for a brief stopover, he might have come and gone without incident…were it not for a No-Maj (American for Muggle) named Jacob, a misplaced magical case, and the escape of some of Newt’s fantastic beasts, which could spell trouble for both the wizarding and No-Maj worlds.
