Straight from San Diego Comic Con 2016, it seems we have our first, unexpected look at the Hulk’s armor he’ll be rocking in his upcoming team-up with Thor in Thor: Ragnarok. A story arc fans have been begging years for, “Planet Hulk” featured Marvel’s Illuminati – the world’s most intelligent superheroes, including Iron Man, Black Panther, and Doctor Strange – locking Hulk in a ship and shooting him off into space to bring an end to his non-stop destruction.
From there, the story unravels as the spaceship holding the big guy malfunctions and crashes on Sakaar, a planet all about gladiatorial combat. Once on the planet, and while wearing his new duds, Hulk manages to overthrow the higher-ups while fighting in the games, eventually becoming the planet’s King. But not all was swell, as the ship that brought him there blew up and destroys Sakaar, which included Hulk’s wife and unborn child. Being the Hulk, he rounds up a group of combat-oriented survivors and sets his course for Earth, where he finds and fights nearly every hero he can; this story was dubbed “World War Hulk.” Both the “Planet Hulk” and “Word War Hulk” storylines went down in Marvel’s history books as one of the best Hulk arcs of all-time.
With two mediocre solo attempts at the Green Goliath on the big-screen, Marvel took a step back and planted him within the Avengers movies, where he has succeeded beyond their wildest imagination. With the success, fans now want more of Hulk, and they want “Planet Hulk.” And when the news broke that Thor: Ragnarok would feature a team-up of Thor and Hulk, the fan community went berserk, could the “Planet Hulk” dream becoming true? It seems like that is very much the case, to a certain extent at least. While Marvel’s panel was chugging along, kicking-ass in Hall H, they quietly revealed the look Hulk will be rocking in Thor: Ragnarok coming next year, and it almost went unnoticed.
Sitting on display, with no word whatsoever, was the armored uniform Hulk will be strapping on in what seems like an adaptation of the “Planet Hulk” storyline in Ragnarok. While it may not be the exact form of “Planet Hulk” fans have come to love, there’s no doubt that the following image confirms that we’ll be seeing a piece of that famous storyline planted within the third Thor. Director Taika Waititi has described the film as a “buddy cop” movie between Thor and Banner, could we see both Hulk and Thor take on the gladiatorial planet of Sakaar? Whatever the case may be, it’s going to interesting and exciting at the same time to see how Hulk’s armor factors into the Ragnarok storyline.
What do you think? Will we be seeing the “Planet Hulk” storyline featured within Ragnarok? Will it be both Hulk and Thor? How excited are you for the third Thor? Taika Waititi’s Thor: Ragnarok hits theaters November 3rd, 2017 and stars Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Tom Hiddleston, Cate Blanchett, Jef Goldblum, Karl Urban, Tessa Thompson, Idris Elba, and Anthony Hopkins.
