Fans of the Bourne franchise got their wish, as the studios found a way to reunite Matt Damon and director Paul Greengrass for another installment. What these two brought to Supremacy and Ultimatum made the initial trilogy overall great, and it was obvious that fans wanted more. The anticipation is high, with just one week until the release of Jason Bourne. Already people are asking whether or not the duo would return for another installment.
Previously, Greengrass has gone on record saying that he wouldn’t make another Bourne film. Damon has said on multiple occasions that he would only return if Greengrass committed, and so he did. Their responses today when asked if they would make a fourth Bourne film together referenced their previous replies to the same question, and also the future of the franchise.
Director Paul Greengrass:
“I’m not going to make the mistake of saying ‘never’, like I did before. But I’m not going to be sitting around. I’ve got other films to make.”
“At a certain point, I said to Paul, ‘People really want to see this movie, and that’s not something to turn our noses up at…Having made movies that didn’t find an audience, I didn’t want to thumb our nose at this opportunity.”
“My guess is it will be a while before we’ll even get around to doing another one. They might reboot me before I bow out.”
I’m betting that Jason Bourne is going to be one of the bigger hits of the summer. We’re already hearing the studios are thinking long-term for the franchise, and the movie hasn’t even come out yet.
Universal Chairwoman Donna Langley:
“Even though Matt and Paul had been very definitive about not wanting to come back, we weren’t really willing to submit to that…Look, here’s what I think the goal is: to keep Matt Damon and Paul Greengrass doing Bourne movies till they can’t do them anymore.”
Assuming the interest is mutual, the best thing for Universal to do is keep a strong business relationship with both Greengrass and Damon. That means potentially funding or co-funding each person’s other projects, similar to what Ben Affleck is doing with Warner Bros. If that happens, we might be able to get a few more Bourne films, including the Aaron Cross & Jason Bourne crossover that fans are asking for.
First things first, Jason Bourne needs to be a hit at the box office. I think it’ll open big its first weekend. Then the real test comes in the following weeks, with the release of Suicide Squad.
