When Ben Affleck signs on for a film, whether it be as an actor or director, he takes a hard look at the material. For Batman v Superman, he would be portraying the Caped Crusader in a way never done before. The result for him was an absolute success, especially when considering nobody really gave him a chance in the beginning. His Batman was the highlight of the film.
Now Affleck has been confirmed to not only reprise his role in the Batman solo movie, but will co-writing (alongside DC films co-runner Geoff Johns) and directing. During the recent press tour on the set of Justice League, Affleck was asked about an update on the project for the first time since being confirmed to direct.
“I think they have a date for it. Although, I don’t know if I would necessarily be able to make that date because I don’t have a script that’s ready yet. So that’s my—my timetable is I’m not going to make a movie until there’s a script that I think is good because I’ve been on the end of the things when you make movies when you have a script that’s not good yet and it doesn’t pan out.” [laughs]
Later in the press tour, he was asked again…
“I have a script, we’re still working on it, and I’m not happy enough with it yet to actually go out there and make a Batman movie, for which I have the highest of standards, I would say. That’s something that would have to pass a very high bar for me. It’s not just like, ‘Yeah, that might be fun, let’s go try this out.’”
And that folks is an example of an actor learning and growing from his past failures. The solo Batman film doesn’t have an official release date, but I’m speculating it could sometime in 2018 or 2019. Expect an announcement at this year’s San Diego Comic Con event.
Clearly, Affleck isn’t concerned about meeting Warner Bros deadline, because lets face it, they need him more than he needs them. Also he’s been on a hot streak as a director with Gone Baby Gone, The Town, and Argo. This movie has the potential of not only being the best Batman movie to date, but also a legit Oscar contender. That to me is worth the wait.
