What a coincidence. One day after it was announced that Suicide Squad will have a major presence at this year’s Comic Con convention, news comes that Marvel Studios’ Doctor Strange and possibly Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will also be present.
For the past couple of weeks, I’ve been under the impression that Marvel would not be attending the convention for the second year in a row. It was never confirmed, but word spread shortly after 20th Century Fox pulled out. The latest tweets from directors Scott Derrickson (Dr. Strange) and James Gunn (GOTG Vol. 2), are far from a confirmation, but suggest a likely presence from the studio.
Hall H panels are the biggest events that take place during the convention. Its a chance for their studios to show their latest efforts to their hardcore fan base. Its also a helluva fun time to watch, whether your there in person or through your computer screen.
WHAT TO EXPECT
For Warner Bros, this is a major opportunity to restore confidence in those who’ve all but lost theirs after Batman v Superman.
David Ayer and his Suicide Squad cast featuring Will Smith, Margot Robbie, and Jared Leto should be the main focus of DC’s presentation, but I wouldn’t rule out a Geoff Johns appearance as the recently announced Co-Chief of DC movies. Hopefully, they hold back on showing anymore new footage, seeing as we’ve already had three incredible trailers. I’m sure just having the director and cast present, and them talking about their approach to this film will generate enough excitement.
Also keep in mind that Wonder Woman has finished its production, meanwhile Zack Snyder is hard at work on Justice League. Both films are scheduled to release in 2017, making it a possibility to see some kind of footage from both.
For Marvel, they know how to put on a show for their fans. From Tom Hiddleston taking the stage as Loki, to the cast of Avengers: Age of Ultron coming out to Michael Jackson’s Beat It.
By the time Comic Con arrives in July, it’ll be the perfect to debut the second trailer for Doctor Strange, with the entire cast present (Benedict Cumberbatch, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Mads Mikkelson, etc). In a tweet below for James Gunn, he teases a possible appearance for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. This makes sense when considering the release date for that film (May 2017) taking place before next year’s Comic Con. Also might not be a bad idea to debut a teaser trailer, although I wouldn’t count on it. Traditionally, Marvel debuts new trailers during Jimmy Kimmel Live, and the controversy over fans recording exclusive footage and leaking it online are giving studios less of a reason to continue sharing content.
Marvel also has an opportunity to announce their Captain Marvel, which many are hoping will be Oscar winning actress Brie Larson. Kevin Feige has previously said that we’ll get an announcement very soon, once a deal is done. So if anything, this year’s Comic Con should be met with very high anticipation. Man, I really wish I was going this year.
