When the news of J.J. Abrams taking the helm of the return of the galaxy far, far away broke, I was not only over-the-top excited, but also knew that it meant a new direction for Star Trek. 2009s Star Trek is an unbelievable film, one that broke my All-Time Top 10 at one point. And while Star Trek Into Darkness wasn’t a better sequel, it’s still a film I very much enjoy and will watch whenever I see it pop up on TV. What I’m trying to get at is I was bummed when it was announced that Abrams wasn’t returning to direct the threequel, and that showed in its first trailer.
Justin Lin is a great director. What he did for the Fast & Furious franchise goes without saying, but I was never behind him directing Star Trek Beyond. It’s nothing against Lin as a director, but he’s an action oriented director and that’s not what Star Trek is. Sure, Abrams’ two definitely had some action, but they were films that were setting up the Star Trek everyone knows. Into Darkness left us promising that we’re now at the point in these movies that Star Trek is, well, Star Trek. Problem is, the first trailer for Beyond felt like the Fast & Furious of Star Trek. Although I love the throwback with Beastie Boys, it just didn’t feel like Star Trek. It was to big and to action-packed, just a totally different vibe from what I was hoping. But luckily, we now have a second trailer to go off of…
As you can tell, I’m a bit passionate about this franchise. Deep space adventure in a time where we all thought we’d never see another Star Wars, J.J. Abrams gave a fun, refreshing, and modern take to this franchise that not only won over long-time fans, but new ones as well. So when I didn’t like that first trailer, I was bummed. I’ve been looking forward to this film for so long, mainly because of Into Darkness‘ ending. And that’s why I’m so freaking thankful this second trailer is what it is. It’s exactly what I wanted from that first trailer, but more. It’s building on what this franchise is, with characters and story. The Enterprise crew is all back and they look better than ever. Idris Elba and his villain side is just awesome. And the alien aspect looks really cool. I’m very excited for this film because we’re stepping away from Earth and the Enterprise is on their own in deep space. They’re going to come into contact with unknown world and species, and this trailer teases that in a great way.
