Harley Quinn Led Spinoff Film in Warner Bros. Future Plans

Warner Bros continues adding to their promising slate of DC superhero films. Except this one may not be led by a “superhero”, and will instead heavily feature one of DC comics most popular villains. If the report from The Hollywood Reporter is accurate, then Harley Quinn will lead her own spin-off film that will feature other female DC characters.

Margot Robbie is set to appear as Harley Quinn in the highly anticipated Suicide Squad. The actress won fans over the moment her casting was announced back in 2014. Since then, she’s been the most hyped character in the marketing for a film that features an ensemble of bad guys. Critics and audiences alike have been a fan of Robbie since her debut in The Wolf of Wall Street. According to the report, Robbie pitched an idea for a movie to Warner Bros, and in turn they loved it enough to further develop the project. An unnamed female writer is currently working on the screenplay, with Robbie on board to star and produce.

As far as the other female DC characters are concerned, the report mentions Batgirl and Birds of Prey as possible candidates. In the comics, the Birds of Prey consisted of a group of super heroines featuring characters like Black Canary, The Oracle (Barbara Gordon), and Huntress. The recent New 52 comics heavily featured male allies such as Nightwing, Wildcat, and Hawk & Dove (the former being the group’s first official member).

Warner Bros has yet to make this project official, as they await the results of Suicide Squad. No matter what that outcome is, I’m willing to bet that Robbie steals the show as Harley Quinn. Its great seeing those who take on these comic book roles become passionate about these characters. Warner Bros would be smart to utilize Robbie’s talent and star power to the max. Only three months remain until Suicide Squad releases.
