Spoiler alert, but it seems Robert Downey Jr will make it out alive in Captain America: Civil War. If we’re being honest though, what were the chances that Iron Man would get killed off in this film and not Avengers: Infinity War? If I’m not mistaken, the actor previously signed on for at least two more films post-Age of Ultron, which I thought at the time were Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War. However, his addition to the upcoming Marvel/Sony co-produced Spider-Man: Homecoming suggests that Marvel re-worked his contract. Regardless, we’re getting more of RDJ as Tony Stark which is awesome!
His involvement makes sense considering the Homecoming storyline, which involves both Iron Man and Captain America. Also what better way to comfort audiences about another Spider-Man franchise reboot (starring a different actor as Peter Parker), than to include Marvel’s biggest star/character. There’s no word on what kind of role Downey will have in Homecoming, but I’ve always thought it would be the role of a mentor. Sooner or later, Spider-Man will become the center of the Marvel Cinematic Universe as far as characters go, and it’ll be fun to see Iron Man show this young Spidey what it means to be an Avenger.
I’m sure once I see Captain America: Civil War, I’ll get more hints at what Stark’s relationship with Peter Parker will mean for his solo-movie. Until then, I’ll keep feeding myself with all these TV spots and casting announcements, in hopes that none of it spoils the movie.
