In honor of Earth Day today, 20th Century Fox has released a new trailer for their 20 year in-the-making sequel Independence Day: Resurgence. The movie takes place in real-time, 20 years after the events of the original film with original director Roland Emmerich back behind the camera. While Will Smith and his popular Steven Hiller character unfortunately won’t be returning, the sequel sees Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman, Vivica A. Fox, and Judd Hirsch back alongside a number of newcomers.
In the 20 years since the original invasion, the nations of Earth have joined forces and created a defense program to protect the planet using recovered Alien technology. While it has kept Earth and its people safe for two decades, it, along with a small group of brave men and women, will now need to bring the world back from extinction as the aliens have returned with an advanced and unprecedented force.
I’ll be straight, I dug the first trailer for Resurgence. It’s a summer popcorn blockbuster, and that’s exactly the vibe it gave off. I was intrigued not only by the return of some of these characters and the tie-in to the original, but the new elements that were being brought in. Mainly the idea of our world using the leftover alien technology to further our own advancements. Imagine what our world would look like with 20 years of alien tech under our belt? Not just for military purposes, but like the synopsis says, protection. It’s going to make for some very exciting things on screen, especially action sequences. And this new trailer definitely teases that, with some big “wow” moments. Although I don’t care for the title and am a bit worried about it becoming a so-called “CGI fest”, I’m all on Resurgence.
Check out the new trailer below and head down to the comments and let us know your thoughts. Do you like the idea of the sequel? How does it look to you? Or are you still questioning it a bit? Sound off below! Roland Emmerich’s Independence Day: Resurgence hits theaters June 24th, 2016 and stars Liam Hemsworth, Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman, Maika Monroe, Jessie Usher, William Fichtner, Joey King, and Sela Ward.
We always knew they were coming back. After Independence Day redefined the event movie genre, the next epic chapter delivers global spectacle on an unimaginable scale. Using recovered alien technology, the nations of Earth have collaborated on an immense defense program to protect the planet. But nothing can prepare us for the aliens’ advanced and unprecedented force. Only the ingenuity of a few brave men and women can bring our world back from the brink of extinction.
