Just as they promised, MGM has released the first official trailer for their upcoming western The Magnificent Seven. The film is directed by Antoine Fuqua (Training Day, The Equalizer) and is a remake of the original 1960 classic of the same name. The film follows seven mercenaries as they are hired by desperate townspeople for their protection against an industrialist and his men who have taken deadly control of their town. But as the outlaws, bounty hunters, and other hired guns prepare for a violent showdown in Rose Creek, they find themselves fighting for more than just money.
Yesterday, USA Today released a handful of images given us our first official look at Fuqua’s wester. The images featured the magnificent seven themselves: Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt, Ethan Hawke, Vincent D’Onofrio, Byung-hun Lee, Martin Sensmeier, and Manuel Garcia-Rulfo. Now we have the first trailer, which gives us extended looks at the magnificent seven in action, as well as first looks at Hayley Bennett, Matt Bomer, and Peter Sarsgaard. I just watched the original film late last year and really enjoyed it and understood why it is considered such a classic. While I haven’t been the biggest fan of Fuqua, when it was announced that he was heading a modern day telling of that story, I got pretty damn excited. Then the cast was announced, with Fuqua reteaming with his Training Day stars Denzel Washington and Ethan Hawke, as well as probably the coolest dude on planet earth at the moment, Chris Pratt. But of course, a solid director and a badass cast doesn’t always guarantee a hit, especially when it comes to a genre that’s had a rough go as of late.
We may have to wait until later this year to check out The Magnificent Seven if full, but this first trailer kicked some ass, I had a really good time with it. It wouldn’t be any other way, but I love seeing Denzel be the one to bring all these gunslingers together. And then when Pratt pops on screen, you can do nothing else but grin and just have a ton of fun watching him work. The action looks big and fun and intense, and so far, I’m liking the group of men/characters they’ve brought together. Of course it’s still just a teaser trailer, but it did its job in wanting me to want more. And like I said above, westerns have been a bit dead as of late, hopefully this film will start to turn the tide for a truly classic genre.
Watch the debut trailer below and let us know your thoughts in the comments. Have you seen the original? How about this trailer and its modern day telling? Favorite moment? The Magnificent Seven rides into theaters September 23rd, 2016 and stars Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt, Ethan Hawke, Hayley Bennett, Vincent D’Onofrio, Matt Bomer, Byung-hun Lee, Martin Sensmeier, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, and Peter Sarsgaard.
Director Antoine Fuqua brings his modern vision to a classic story in Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures’ and Columbia Pictures’ The Magnificent Seven. With the town of Rose Creek under the deadly control of industrialist Bartholomew Bogue (Peter Sarsgaard), the desperate townspeople employ protection from seven outlaws, bounty hunters, gamblers and hired guns – Sam Chisolm (Denzel Washington), Josh Farraday (Chris Pratt), Goodnight Robicheaux (Ethan Hawke), Jack Horne (Vincent D’Onofrio), Billy Rocks (Byung-Hun Lee), Vasquez (Manuel Garcia-Rulfo), and Red Harvest (Martin Sensmeier). As they prepare the town for the violent showdown that they know is coming, these seven mercenaries find themselves fighting for more than money.
