Warner Bros. has released a brand new trailer for their upcoming Harry Potter spinoff Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. Alongside a number of other big tentpole films, WB debuted the new footage at the MTV Movie Awards this past weekend. If you’re looking forward to jumping back into the world of Harry Potter, don’t jump the gun just yet. Fantastic Beasts is set over 70 years before the events of those books/films, but that doesn’t mean there ins’t a connection.
Directed by David Yates (who directed the final four Harry Potter films) and written by author Rowling herself (her first screenplay), Fantastic Beasts takes place in 1926 New York City, where magizoologist Newt Scamander (played by Oscar-winner Eddie Redmayne) finds himself running up against magicians in hiding and a government on its toes after part of his collection of some of the world’s most spectacular magical creatures escape on the streets of New York.
Although it is still very much just a teaser trailer (which I like, movie doesn’t come out until November), I like the trailer. I don’t love it, but I really like it. I enjoyed the subtleness and nods to the original franchise that it’s stemming from. The looks and feel is exactly what I want to see (kudos to Yates), and Eddie Redmayne looks like he was born for these kind of movies. It’s different enough compared to the HP films where it gets us to want to do exactly what the trailer says, “explore a new era of the Wizarding Word”. Plus, that Wizarding World comes from J.K. Rowling, of course we want to explore! But like I said, it still is just a teaser. And keeping that in mind, it does its job and gets me excited for the first official trailer, whenever that is.
Watch the new trailer below and let us know what you think down below in the comments! Did you like the teaser? What was your favorite part? Does this trailer get your more or less excited? David Yates’ Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them opens on November 18th, 2016. Directed by David Yates and also stars Katherine Waterston, Alison Sudol, Dan Fogler, Colin Farrell, Ezra Miller, Samantha Morton, Ron Perlman, and Jon Voight.
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them opens in 1926 as Newt Scamander has just completed a global excursion to find and document an extraordinary array of magical creatures. Arriving in New York for a brief stopover, he might have come and gone without incident…were it not for a No-Maj (American for Muggle) named Jacob, a misplaced magical case, and the escape of some of Newt’s fantastic beasts, which could spell trouble for both the wizarding and No-Maj worlds.
