From the day it was announced, the biggest question revolving around X-Men: Apocalypse has been whether or not the First Class trio of Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender, and James McAvoy would return once Apocalypse‘s credit role. When they first signed on all those years ago, each of them weren’t as big of names as they are now. Since their first appearance as the popular mutants, Lawrence has two Academy Awards, Fassbender has been nominated for one, and McAvoy has starred in many high-praised projects. With their stock continuing to rise and their superhero box checked, would they be willing to continue their run as these beloved X-Men characters? Both Fassbender and McAvoy came out last year stating they’d be interested in doing so, and now we can add the third piece to the puzzle.
This time last year, there were rumblings going around that Jennifer Lawrence wanted to step away from the franchise, with her even admitting Apocalypse would be her “last one, sadly”. But with the few months of filming and the press tour for Apocalypse about to begin, she seems to have changed her mind. While speaking with Empire Magazine, she revealed the following:
“I am dying to come back,” she told us. “I love these movies, I love being in them. I love ensemble movies because it’s not on anyone’s shoulders.”
In no way is that a confirmation or definite yes that she will be back, but she sounds very open to the possibility. According to director Bryan Singer, Apocalypse marks the end of a trilogy, which begin with X-Men: First Class. Not only that, but the contracts of the First Class core of Lawrence, Fassbender, McAvoy and Nicholas Hoult all expire with Apocalypse. All the actors sure seem open to returning to the franchise, but that all depends on whether or not the post-Apocalypse world calls for their return. I highly doubt that Fox and Bryan Singer wouldn’t want these guys back, but it could be quite possible that they want to take the franchise in a new direction and focus on the “New Mutants” that Apocalypse is introducing – Cyclops, Storm, Jean Grey, Nightcrawler, etc.
With Days of Future Past creating an entire new timeline for this universe and going off the trailers from Apocalypse so far, I’m putting all my chips on Mystique being a huge focal point for the X-Men team going forward. Instead of her being Magneto’s right hand woman like she was in the original trilogy, I see her becoming that same figure for Professor X and the young team of mutants, the role Halle Berry’s Storm played in the original trilogy. If that is in fact the case, we could be seeing the likes of Lawrence, Fassbender, McAvoy and Hoult back and continuing their mutant affairs in the next set of movies.
