‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ Deleted Scenes Images & Details Revealed

Star Wars: The Force Awakens is about to exit out of light-speed and hit on home video is just a matter of weeks. Since the announcement of its Blu-ray release date, we’ve gotten more summaries than details on what exactly the bonus features will hold, but now we have a nifty little breakdown of the Blu-ray’s deleted scenes we’ve all been waiting to see.

Entertainment Weekly released the images and details earlier this morning, revealing that there will be seven deleted scenes featured on the Blu-ray. While none of them are essential to watching the final cut of the film, the scenes should enhance the film-watching experience for anyone (especially Star Wars fans), possibly even strengthening a particular character or filling in the blanks between scenes.

EW hasn’t only released never-before-seen images of the film, but they’ve included a great breakdown of the featured scenes. Get a look at the upcoming deleted scenes below. Star Wars: The Force Awakens is released on Blu-ray and DVD April 5th, 2016.

Director J.J. Abrams had this to say about the scenes and why they didn’t make the final cut:

“There are so many things that end up getting cut because of the greater good, because of the rhythm of the sequence or the need to get on with it, a sense of redundancy,” director J.J. Abrams tells EW. “You don’t know any of these things when you’re making the movie, of course. It was sometimes after months of working on something that you realize finally — you just don’t need it.”

In one of the deleted scenes planned for early in the movie, John Boyega’s FN-2187 hasn’t yet fled from the First Order, but he’s already a lost person. This shot is from before the troopers round up the villagers but after his mask is marked with the blood of a fallen fellow soldier. The conscience-stricken Finn comes face-to-face with a woman in the shadows of a small building. He raises his weapon … and makes a fateful decision.

This shot is from a bonus deleted scene that will be available only digitally. (But remember, each Blu-ray combo pack includes a free download, so you can get it that way.) When the First Order attacks the castle run by Lupita Nyong’o’s Maz Kanata, Han, Finn, and Chewie face down this squad of stormtroopers in her basement. Han does his usual stellar job talking his way out of trouble. For those craving a little more of Solo’s smart-ass swagger, this moment will make you say: “I love you …”

In this deleted scene, Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) leads a squad of stormtroopers to the crash-site of the Millennium Falcon on the surface of Starkiller Base. Inspecting the abandoned starship stirs bittersweet memories for the Dark Side acolyte, who is still battling the pull to the light side … and now knows his estranged father is conspiring against him.

“You never go into a day of shooting and say, ‘This is probably going to be on the cutting room floor,’” says Abrams, seen here in a newly released behind-the-scenes shot with Harrison Ford. “Every day feels as essential as anything else. It’s always annoying to realize that you wasted anyone’s time on shooting something that wasn’t necessary.”

Another deleted sequence would have introduced Carrie Fisher’s General Leia much earlier in the film as she weighs what to do after the First Order’s massacre on Jakku. Emun Elliott, best known for playing Moray on the British series The Paradise and Marillion in Game of Thrones, also gets a moment to shine as the Resistance communications officer Major Brance, who receives an early distress signal from BB-8 informing them of the attack.

Oscar Isaac also makes an appearance in a deleted sequence called “X-Wings Prepare for Lightspeed,” which features his hotshot pilot Poe Dameron (seen here in a file photo) leading a squadron of Resistance fighters into an assault on Starkiller base. Most of the aerial battles in The Force Awakens took place within the atmosphere of planets, and this would have provided a moment when we get to see a large group of starships actually among the stars.

Another deleted scene will take place after John Boyega’s Finn is injured in this lightsaber duel against Kylo Ren. It features Daisy Ridley’s Rey back at the Resistance base, watching over her critically wounded friend as she gets an update on his condition from Dr. Kalonia (played by Downton Abbey‘s Harriet Walton.)

Okay, we don’t have a shot of this deleted scene, but it involves a chase between First Order snowspeeders. (The best we can do is this shot of one of the toys.) Here’s what the scene will deliver: Finn and Rey hijacking one of these devices for a desperate escape from the depths of Starkiller Base. How did they get from the interior of the base to that snowy woodland fight with Kylo Ren? This sequence will connect the plot points.
